“2000 meters to Andriïvka” ranked second best film of 2025 by The Guardian

The prestigious British newspaper The Guardian has unveiled its ranking of the 50 best films of 2025, and it is a Ukrainian work that shines in second place: the poignant documentary “2000 meters to Andriïvka” by director Mstyslav Tchernov.

The authors of the ranking emphasize that, in this moving follow-up to his film “20 Days in Mariupol”, photojournalist Mstyslav Chernov films the grueling counter-offensive of the 3rd Assault Brigade. Guardian critics hail a work “devastating” et « masterful »which captures meter by meter the horror of modern warfare: trenches worthy of the First World War, omnipresent drones and incessant bombardment.

The top 10 in the ranking includes:

  • “One Battle After Another” by Paul Thomas Anderson;
  • “Young Mothers” by brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne;
  • “A Simple Coincidence” by Jafar Panahi;
  • “A Real Pain” by Jesse Eisenberg;
  • “Riefenstahl” d’Andreas Veiel;
  • “La Tour de glace” by Lucile Hadžihalilović;
  • “Marty Supreme.” The Genius of Combinations” by Josh Safdie;
  • “The Inspirer” by Kelly Reichardt;
  • “The Nickel Boys” by RaMell Ross.

As announced by Ukrinform, “2000 meters to Andriïvka” represents Ukraine at the 98th Oscars in the category of best international film. The film delves into the heart of the consequences of the Russo-Ukrainian war, through the intimate and painful gaze of the soldiers: their origins, their impossible choices in the trenches and their fight for every piece of native land.

The world premiere took place at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2025, where the film won the Best Director award in the World Cinema Documentary section. An international recognition which highlights Ukrainian resilience in the face of Russian aggression.
