88 million dollars in one weekend: Avatar 3 flies over the North American box office
Barely released, it’s already a hit. The third film Avatar, James Cameron’s ecological fable which became one of the biggest hits in cinema history, dominated the North American box office for its theatrical release during the weekend before Christmas.
“Avatar: Fire and Ash” grossed $88 million in the United States and Canada, and $345 million worldwide, over the weekend, according to estimates from specialist firm Exhibitor Relations on Sunday.
Released on Wednesday December 17 in France, it had the best start of the year in France with 273,370 admissions on its first day of operation.
The film should once again be a great success internationally, said David Gross, analyst at Franchise Entertainment Research, who emphasizes that Avatar “touches audiences all over the world.”
Word of mouth
Produced like the previous installments by 20th Century Studios, this new opus should benefit, according to him, from “excellent word of mouth”. “There’s more to the Avatar films than how they start. It’s what they do after they get out that counts,” he added.
The first part, released in 2009 and the second in 2022, respectively occupy first and third place for the biggest global box office successes of all time.
The film once again stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana as former Marine Jake Sully and warrior Neytiri, who face a new enemy threatening the lives of their family on the planet Pandora.
“David” and “The Cleaning Lady” on the podium
Second place at the North American box office is occupied by “David”, an animated film revisiting the biblical story of David and Goliath, with 20 million dollars in revenue.
“The Housekeeper,” an adaptation of Freida McFadden’s best-seller about a young woman (Sydney Sweeney) hired by a wealthy New York family as a domestic worker, is third with $19 million.
The animated film “The SpongeBob Movie: One for Everyone, All Pirates!” », based on the famous Nickelodeon program, debuted in fourth place, with 16 million dollars, for its first weekend in theaters.
In fifth place is another animated film, “Zootopia 2,” from Disney, which collected $14.5 million. The film, which is in the running for the Oscars, has already generated $1.27 billion in worldwide revenue.
