Top 5 best films to watch in December 2025 on Netflix (Troll 2, Wake Up Dead Man, Submersion…)

December on Netflix this year looks like a very organized end of the world: a giant troll waking up in Norway, an apocalyptic flood in South Korea, an impossible murder in a small American parish, a lie in a Santa costume in a ski resort, and a family trying to hold together around a mother at the end of her life.

No “Christmas wallpaper” to put in the background: the platform aligns real big pieces of cinema, between blockbuster disaster, luxury whodunit and intimate drama carried by Kate Winslet. The idea here is not to list everything that comes out, but to select five films that structure the month, each with a clear gesture: spectacle, comfort, treasure hunt, climatic anxiety, or face-to-face with loss.

Before going into detail, a little calendar to help you get your bearings:

  • December 1 : Troll 2 (Norway, action/fantasy, Netflix)

  • December 3 : My Secret Santa (US, Christmas romantic comedy)

  • December 12 : Wake Up Dead Man: A tale of daggers drawn (United States, mystery thriller)

  • December 19 : Submersion (The Great FloodSouth Korea, SF disaster)

  • December 24 : Goodbye June (UK/US, Christmas family drama

Troll 2 – Nordic Kaiju on Snow (December 1)

Direct continuation of Troll (2022), this Norwegian film by Roar Uthaug features Nora, Andreas and Captain Kris facing a new, even more dangerous troll.

The monster unleashes a wave of destruction across Norway, forcing the trio to delve into the country’s mythology to understand what’s really at stake.

Netflix made it one of its big action titles at the start of the month, an assumed “house blockbuster” format.

My Secret Santa – Christmas comedy in a chic resort (December 3)

A single mother, struggling to find a job, disguises herself as a man to get a job as Santa Claus in a posh ski resort. Everything becomes complicated when she begins to fall in love with the hotel manager, without being able to reveal who she really is.

A seasonal romantic comedy, the film plays hard on misunderstandings, the question of social disguise and the snowy resort setting.

Wake Up Dead Man: a tale of daggers drawn (December 12)

Third investigation by Benoit Blanc, still played by Daniel Craig, this time in a small parish in New England where a charismatic priest is found dead.

The detective must untangle rumors of miracles, religious tensions and very earthly interests, supported by the young local vicar.

Presented at the Toronto Film Festival before its worldwide release on Netflix, the film features a massive cast (Glenn Close, Josh O’Connor, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, etc.) and a real old-fashioned treasure hunt.

Submergence – End of the world in an apartment (December 19)

South Korean film by Kim Byung-woo, Submersion follows a few residents stuck in a building that is sinking in a gigantic flood, on the last day of a submerged Earth.

A character seems trapped in a time loop, replaying the same hours over and over again, while security guard Hee-jo tries to save AI researcher Anna.

Selected at the Busan Film Festival before its worldwide release on Netflix, the film mixes disaster, science fiction and urban behind closed doors.

Goodbye June – Christmas in the face of disappearance (December 24)

For her first production, Kate Winslet features four brothers and sisters returning to the bedside of their mother June, played by Helen Mirren, whose health is declining.

Between family meals, old resentments and almost methodical organization of the “grand departure”, the film focuses on ordinary gestures which become farewells.

First shown theatrically in the UK and US, Goodbye June arrives on Netflix on December 24, envisioned as an end-of-year family drama, centered on grief and connection.
