“The Secret Agent” is named the best film of 2025 by The Hollywood Reporter magazine

The magazine The Hollywood Reporter dos Santos once again stirred the world of entertainment by releasing its latest list of the best films of 2025, placing “The Secret Agent”, by Kleber Mendonça Filho and starring Wagner Moura, at the top.
The publication highlights the originality and uniqueness of the production:
“Set in 1977, at the height of Brazil’s long military dictatorship, Kleber Mendonça Filho’s film masterfully reinvents the political thriller, featuring Wagner Moura in his best performance as Armando, a technology expert who returns to his hometown of Recife, in the Northeast, after a disturbing confrontation with a corrupt federal official. Filled with absurd humor, poignant reflections on history and memory, strong emotions, vibrant colors and a deep love for cinema, this is a singular film.”

Last Monday (08), it secured three nominations for the 2026 Golden Globes in the categories “Best Non-English Language Film”, “Best Actor in a Drama” for Moura and “Best Film”, consolidating its strength in the awards season.
Set in Recife in 1977, the political thriller follows Marcelo (Moura), a technology expert who returns to the city and finds himself involved in a plot of secrets and surveillance.
The cast also includes Maria Fernanda Cândido, Gabriel Leone, Alice Carvalho, Tânia Maria, João Vitor Silva, Ítalo Martins, Hermila Guedes, Thomás Aquino, Udo Kier, Isabél Zuaa and more.
The film, starring Moura, is Brazil’s representative at the Oscars in the search for a nomination for best international film.
The work premiered at the Cannes Festival in May this year and won best director and best actor.
