Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow – the DCU soars into space in an epic cosmic adventure
2026 will be a memorable year for superhero fans. After Creature Commandos, Superman e Peacemaker 2the new DCU signed by James Gunn and Peter Safran is preparing to launch its fourth chapter: Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
A title that has sparked the curiosity of spectators since the first trailer, promising an epic adventure that is completely different from what we have seen so far.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow it will be an adventure entirely in space
Craig Gillespie, director of the film, explained to ScreenRant ithe project: “The whole movie takes place in space. It’s a very different world than Superman, for one thing. And so we’re creating a completely new setting.” . A statement that marks an important turning point: if Superman brought us back to the Earthly roots of the Man of Steel, Supergirl will catapult us into a real space opera.
James Gunn took things up a notch, underlining the philosophy behind the new narrative universe: “From the beginning, we have said that the DCU is a saga in the service of stories. We want interesting and different stories to be presented in the cinema. And this film, I think, as you can see, will not be a banal female version of Superman. It’s a space opera completely unto itself.”
And that’s exactly the point: Kara Zor‑El will never again be relegated to the role of “Superman’s cousin.” With Woman of Tomorrowthe Maiden of Tomorrow becomes the absolute protagonist of a cosmic journey that will take her far from Earth, among alien planets, intergalactic battles and existential dilemmas. The film takes inspiration from Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s miniseries of the same name, which it redefined Supergirl with a darker and more mature tone. Kara, played by Milly Alcock, is not the sunny, optimistic girl many remember from previous versions. She is a young woman marked by a difficult past, raised among the rubble of Krypton and forced to confront a hostile universe.
Alongside her there will be key characters such as Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley), the Kryptonian dog Krypto, and the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts). The cast is enriched by Emily Beecham in the role of Alura In-Ze, David Krumholtz as Zor-El and above all Jason Momoa in the role of Lobo, the intergalactic bounty hunter who promises to steal the show with his irreverence. Superman won’t be missing either: David Corenswet, protagonist of the 2025 Superman film, will return to play the Man of Steel, strengthening the family and narrative bond between the two characters.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow it is therefore the “fourth chapter” of the roadmap of the new DCU which was designed to build a coherent and varied universe starting from Creature Commandos, the animated series that inaugurated the new course, then Supermanthe first major live action film, released in 2025, and finally Peacemaker 2the second season of the series starring John Cena, confirmed as an integral part of the DCU. Until we get to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow – the film that marks the first major foray into space.
This sequence clearly shows Gunn and Safran’s desire to alternate tones and genres: from animation to classic superhero, from the irreverent satire of Peacemaker to the space opera of Supergirl. The official trailer, released in December 2025, has already shown epic atmospheres and a darker tone, accompanied by the soundtrack of Call Me by Blondie. A detail that recalls the retro style typical of Gunn’s projects and which contributes to creating a unique visual identity.
A film awaits us that not only expands the DC universe, but redefines the role of Supergirl. Kara Zor‑El will be the protagonist of a journey of education and revenge, a heroine who must face the pain of the past and find her place in a universe that does not seem to want to welcome her. And it doesn’t end there: Supergirl will also be a bridge to the subsequent chapters of the DCU. After its release, audiences can expect new adventures that will continue to explore different worlds and characters, delivering on the promise of a narrative universe “at the service of stories.”
In conclusion, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is not just a film about Kara Zor‑El. It is the manifesto of a new way of telling superheroes: more varied, more courageous, more willing to take risks. After years in which Supergirl was often relegated to supporting roles, she will finally have her own epic. On June 24, 2026, when the film arrives in American theaters (and June 25 in Italy), audiences will discover a Darker, more complex and more fascinating Maiden of Tomorrow than ever before. And the DCU, with its fourth chapter, will demonstrate that it has all it takes to become a saga capable of surprising and engaging, film after film, series after series.
