3 best films to watch on Netflix this weekend

The penultimate box office weekend of 2025 promises to be one of the biggest of the year, as visionary director James Cameron returns to Pandora and Avatar: Fire and Ash opens in theaters. Called “an exceptional moviegoing experience” in Collider’s Ross Bonaime’s review, the film is sure to be a big hit, though its chances of reaching the $2 billion-plus benchmark set by previous installments are perhaps low. However, for many, it’s better to spend the last weekend before Christmas snuggled up on the couch with the family, indulging in the best streaming options. With that in mind, here are three movies you should try on Netflix this weekend. For more recommendations, check out our list of the best shows and movies on Netflix. Disclaimer: These titles are available on Netflix US. 3 ‘Honest Thief’ (2020) Rotten Tomatoes: 41% | IMDb: 6.0/10 Liam Neeson could be appearing on millions of people’s screens via Love Actually this weekend before Christmas, so why not change the mold and catch him in his normal action habitat? The 2020 thriller Honest Thief follows Neeson as Tom Dolan, a notorious thief who, after falling in love, decides to confess to his many crimes. However, he finds himself on the receiving end of a double-crossing pair of FBI agents. An action-packed, fast-paced film sprinkled with a healthy dose of dark humor, Honest Thief may not have impressed critics upon its release in 2020, but audiences loved it and still do. Also starring Kate Walsh, Jai Courtney, Jeffrey Donovan, Anthony Ramos and Robert Patrick, this might not be the most realistic film you’re likely to watch this weekend, but it might just be the most entertaining. 2 ‘The Christmas Chronicles’ (2018) Rotten Tomatoes: 67% | IMDb: 7.0/10 Who would have thought that Kurt Russell would become the new generation’s Hollywood Santa Claus? To find out why, you’ll want to watch The Christmas Chronicles this weekend, a film that follows two children, Kate (Darby Camp) and Teddy (Judah Lewis), as they jump into Santa’s sleigh and accidentally cause it to fall and lose all of its presents. Also starring the likes of Lamorne Morris, Oliver Hudson and Kimberly Williams-Paisley, The Christmas Chronicles features a stellar central performance from Russell, who he may not have been born to play, but has certainly aged perfectly for the role. As modern Christmas tales go, The Christmas Chronicles is one of the best and makes for an excellent, easy-viewing festive treat as the big day approaches. 1 ‘What Lies Below’ (2000) Rotten Tomatoes: 49% | IMDb: 6.6/10 For something totally different this last weekend before Christmas, why not try Robert Zemeckis’ turn-of-the-century supernatural film What Lies Beneath? The film stars Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer as Dr. Norman Spencer and his wife, Claire, as their daughter’s recent departure for college is quickly followed by Claire’s experience with strange and sinister happenings at home. With Norman refusing to believe her, can she convince him before it’s too late, or will the truth turn out to be much scarier than she thought? Featuring a pair of powerful performances from Ford and Pfeiffer and an ending that’s sure to keep you glued to your seat, What Lies Beneath is perfect for thriller lovers. Also starring the likes of James Remar, Miranda Otto, Diana Scarwid, Joe Morton and Amber Valletta, you certainly won’t regret discovering What Lies Beneath this weekend.
