James Cameron talks about sensual scene in Avatar 3; read

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the director James Cameron spoke about the importance of one of the most talked about scenes in Avatar: Fire and Ash.

The scene in question shows a meeting between Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) and Varang, leader of the people of Ashes (Oona Chaplin). In this meeting, Quaritch seeks an alliance with Varang and the scene becomes particularly sensual by the franchise’s standards, including the use of hallucinogens and a delicate knife cut in the villain’s chest.

For Cameron, the appeal is in the tension of the scene: “You have no idea what’s going to happen next and they’re fascinating characters, and she’s mesmerizing in the scene. Mesmerizing is the word that always comes to mind for me.

I didn’t realize exactly what I had written for the scene until I saw the actors perform it. Then I realized that there is a double seduction“, said the filmmaker. “He’s there to make her do whatever he wants, so it seems like she has him under control, and yet he has a plan the entire time, which ends up working. From a script point of view, I’m happy with the psychological dynamics of the scene.

The scene is relatively long and the film’s editing team wanted to cut it to reduce the total duration of the project, which ended up being 3h15m in total. “I told them, ‘Guys, you’re about to lose your job, put the whole scene back, with all the lines.’“, declared Cameron.

According to the director, this was also the scene that secured the role for actress Oona Chaplin during the auditions. “There is sexuality, there is a psychology of domination and there is also a lot of fury” he said. “There are many layers to what she’s doing and the forces that motivate her, and Oona was able to float between them in a way that I haven’t seen in the other candidates. In retrospect, I’m sure I could have cast any of them, but my instinct is to always go with the actor who understands the character best.
