Dafter co-directing Take Out with the Oscar award Sean Baker and produced with him titles such as Red Rocket e The Florida Project, Shih-Ching Tsou signs his debut directing with My family in Taipei. The film won the Award for Best Film at this year’s Rome Film Festival and was acclaimed at Cannes 2025 (Critics’ Week): is included in the shortlist for the best international films of the Oscars 2026 for Taiwan. Cinema out today December 22ndis a family drama that intertwines tradition and modernity, written together with Baker himself, who also produced the film and edited it.
With a luminous visual language and a deep empathy towards all his characters, Tsou tells the story of a family’s return to a city that is both a place of memory and rebirth, a frenetic Taipei full of lights and colorsfiltered through the innocent gaze of the tender protagonist I-Jing, who is just 5 years old and explores this new city life with curiosity and wonder. Until her grandfather forbids her to use her left hand, because he considers it evil. A ban that will have unexpected consequences.
