Spider-Man 4 will bring back Marvel villain after eight years

The Spider-Man universe will revisit an old enemy. New photos from the film set Spider-Man: A New Daydirected by Destin Daniel Cretton, revealed the return of Michael Mando as Mac Gargan — a character introduced in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). The actor appears again with a shaved head, reinforcing rumors that the villain Scorpio will finally make his full debut in the MCU.

Mac Gargan was introduced in the 2017 film as a criminal attempting to acquire alien technology weapons following the events of The Avengers (2012). Captured by Spider-Man, he ended up imprisoned, but a post-credits scene already indicated his interest in discovering the hero’s secret identity — a foreshadowing of his transformation into Scorpion, one of the classic villains of Marvel comics.

It is not yet known whether Gargan Spider-Man: A New Day will be the same character as Back Home or a variant brought by the plot of the multiverse, introduced in Spider-Man: No Way Home. As the end of this film erased the world’s memories of Peter Parker, the villain should no longer hold a grudge against the hero, which raises doubts about his new role.

In the comics, Mac Gargan appeared in 1964 as a detective hired by J. Jonah Jameson to investigate Peter Parker. After an experiment that gave him superhuman strength and scorpion instincts, he became one of Spider-Man’s greatest enemies, even hosting the Venom symbiote at one point in history.

In addition to his return to the MCU, Michael Mando has been standing out for other works. The actor participated in the films Straight Line e King Ivoryand played the character Nacho Varga in the acclaimed series Better Call Saul. He is also part of the cast of Criminalan upcoming new series starring Charlie Hunnam and based on a Marvel/Image Comics comic.

About the film

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is preparing to take a new direction in the story of Spider-Man. Spider-Man: A New Daythe next feature film starring Tom Holland, hits theaters on July 30, 2026 and promises to mark the beginning of a new phase for Peter Parker — now more mature and isolated, after the events of No Return Home (2021).

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), the film will be the hero’s first within Phase 6 of the MCU and bets on a “fresh start” tone inspired by the famous comic book saga launched in 2008. According to Holland, this new story “doesn’t feel like the fourth film”, but “a complete rebirth of the character”.

In addition to Holland, the cast includes Zendaya (MJ), Jacob Batalon (Ned), Sadie Sink in a role still kept confidential, Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, a character who must cross Peter’s path in a plot full of action and morality, and Michael Mando, who returns as the villain Scorpio after 8 years. There are rumors that criminal Tombstone (Tombstone, in the comics) will also be introduced as a secondary antagonist.

Filming began in August 2025 and is taking place mainly in the UK. The film promises a more realistic look, with external locations and less dependence on digital effects, in contrast to the studio atmosphere of No Return Home.

Inspired by an arc that redefined the hero’s comics, Spider-Man: A New Day should show Peter Parker trying to rebuild his life after the world has forgotten who he is. Between new challenges and old enemies, the film promises to balance drama, action and nostalgia — opening up space for a new era of the hero within Marvel.
