“Black Phone 2” sounds strong at the box office
The horror sequel “Black phone 2” topped the US box office charts this weekend with 26.5 million dollars in ticket sales, according to studio estimates yesterday. Not only did it surpass the original’s $23.6 million debut, but it’s a win Blumhouse needed after a string of disappointments this year like “M3GAN 2.0.”
Although “Black Phone 2” opened in line with expectations, movie attendance in October remains sluggish, down nearly 11% from last year, according to Comscore.
The overall box office is still up 4% compared to last year, but a big blockbuster that could generate more momentum could come as late as late November or December.

Universal Pictures released “Black Phone 2” in 3,411 US theaters, to a wave of positive reviews.
According to exit polls, 63% of opening weekend audiences were between 18 and 34 years old, and the largest demographic group was Hispanics, who represented 39% of ticket buyers, Caucasians, 35%.
With an additional 15.5 million from 71 international territories, Black Phone 2 had a worldwide launch of $42 million against a reported production budget of $30 million.

Black Phone 2 was also the only movie that really stood out this weekend, despite a number of wide-release options, including the R-rated comedy Good Fortune, which opened with $6.2 million, and the expanded Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield drama After the Hunt, which grossed $1.6 million.
Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein was also released, although Netflix does not report box office receipts.
