Is a sequel to the horror film possible?

Available on Netflix, the Indonesian drama unveiled on October 23, 2025 has climbed into the Top of the most viewed programs on the streaming platform.

It’s the horror film of the moment. The Elixiravailable on Netflix, uses the zombie film genre and focuses on the survival of a small group of people in a world in the midst of an epidemic and dystopian shift.

When a man tries an experimental treatment supposed to make him look younger, he finds himself infected by the product. Contaminated, he attacks his family, starting an invasion that transforms humans into half-dead, half-living creatures hungry for human flesh. Revisiting the epidemic film genre, The Elixir works thanks to its visual intensity and its very gory scenes, while developing a story around greed and over-consumption.

If for a large part of the feature film the characters are all powerless in the face of these recent infected – The Elixir actually follows the first hours of the contamination – the end of the film offers a surprising outcome. Please note, the following lines spoil the end of The Elixir.

Do the protagonists get through it?

From the beginning, The Elixir does not hesitate to sacrifice the protagonists behind the invasion. The father who takes the experimental treatment is thus finished off just after biting his first victim. His death does not end the infection, however, as each person bitten transforms a few minutes later.

Throughout the film, the members of the family fall one after the other, the feature film alternating between predictable and unpredictable deaths as well as heroic sacrifices. Towards the end of the feature film, the survivors, separated by various circumstances, try to find each other after realizing that the rain delays and slows down the infected.

Unfortunately, the situation deteriorates and the infected become too numerous. One of the family members manages to blow up the police station they found themselves in – and which is about to give in – allowing the youngest child in the family to escape with his grandfather’s new wife. If many infected people die instantly, the end shows an infected person still alive running on a road towards a big city. The Elixir took place, in fact, in a fairly isolated countryside, making it possible to reduce infection to the few people present.

During a final scene taking place within a large megacity, The Elixir shows a couple ready to test a sample… that of the experimental treatment, just before they take the plane. The Elixir ends badly, the feature film deliberately leaving the door open to a possible sequel, on a larger scale.
