Verdone, ‘no to political correctness. Future? I’m not optimistic’ – News
‘Vita da Carlo final season’, this is the title – without the possibility of a sequel – of the series signed by Carlo Verdone and Valerio Vestoso, from November 28th exclusively on Paramount+.
It all starts from the not very politically correct gaffe made by Carlo during the Sanremo Festival which left him in the media pillory of woke culture. Hence his successful retirement to Nice with no intention of returning to Rome. But when the general director of the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia contacted him to offer him the director’s chair, Verdone finally gave in. It will be anything but a simple undertaking for him. Meanwhile, there is the generation gap with twenty-year-old students, who grew up in a society steeped in political correctness and then will have a significant problem with one of his teacher colleagues (Sergio Rubini) who secretly hates him.
“In reality, filming at the Experimental Center was a tribute to my father, manager there for many years, and to the young people to whom I dedicate this latest series. There is a generation of twenty-year-old actors who are really good and deserve consideration. This very difficult moment is instead created by the old people, they are the ones who create problems.” And what about political correctness which is somewhat of the theme of this edition? “There are some ridiculous things – says Verdone to ANSA – like ‘parent one’ and ‘parent two’. But please, we are just creating a great confusion from which we will not get out. We cannot erase important historical figures like Shakespeare because he is too patriarchal and is against women. We are talking about the greatest writer in the world. We need to contextualize the period. Italian comedy is based on incorrectness, with this principle it would be thrown away to 80%. You have to have common sense. This seems like a dictatorship of an armchair intelligence.” How do you see the future? “I can’t be optimistic, because I don’t really know what’s going on in the heads of those four or five who are in charge in the world.”
