the Casio watch from “Back to the Future” is back with a retro design and 80s spirit

There are products that not only stand the test of time, but also become your best ally. In a market saturated with new things, retro has found its space: it sells emotions, memories and authenticity. Casio knows this very well. In recent years, it has revived icons such as the DW-5000, the first G-Shock in history, and experimented with curious ideas such as the CRW-001, a ring watch that reinterprets the concept of the original Casiotron.

In 2025, the brand decided to look even further back, to 1985, the year when Marty McFly wore a calculator watch on his wrist. The result is the Casio CA-500WEBF-1Aan official reissue of the classic Vintage watch, in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the film “Back to the Future”. More than an accessory, it is a portrait of that decade in which digital still had a tangible fascination. Unsurprisingly, the watch is already out of stock on Casio’s official online store, even with sales limited to one unit per person.

Design, nostalgia and business: Casio’s journey back in time

Built on the original calculator watches, this watch adopts an aesthetic directly reminiscent of the DeLorean. The polished silver case evokes the stainless steel of Dr. Brown’s car. Casio uses small touches of color on the buttons to mimic timing indicator lights, while the back features an engraving of the flux capacitor, the fictional component that made time travel possible.

It also maintains the functional basis of Casio’s calculator watches, with an eight-digit calculator, a 1/100-second stopwatch capable of 23:59:59.99, a daily alarm, an hourly signal, and an automatic calendar programmed to 2099. It can switch between 12-hour and 24-hour formats. It does not include light, a decision consistent with the original design.

The case is made from resin with a silver finish, while the stainless steel bracelet uses a link bracelet with an adjustable clasp. The watch weighs approximately 53 grams and is water resistant, as stated in the official specifications. It works with a CR2016 battery, with an estimated useful life of five years. Overall, it offers basic, modern functions with the classic design that made it so recognizable.

The presentation of the CA-500WEBF-1A reinforces the idea that this watch was not just made to be sold, but to be evoked. Casio ships it in a box designed like a VHS videotape, with an outer sleeve illustrated with the original film’s logo and aesthetic. The reference is not accidental: Back to the Future was one of the biggest hits on home video in the 1980s, and this choice immediately connects the product to its time of origin.

The CA-500WEBF-1A watch was designed for an audience that seeks more than just functionality. It doesn’t compete with smartwatches or high-end sports models, but rather with memory. In addition to the visual effect, the packaging serves a clear purpose within the Vintage line strategy: transforming each launch into a collectible item.

It’s already sold out

The CA-500WEBF-1A was available from Casio’s official online store as part of the Vintage series. The website now indicates that the watch is out of stock, but the price is still visible in the ad: 114.90 pounds sterling, which is equivalent to around R$830 in direct conversion.
