Manu Ginobili and Fabricio Oberto, present at the premiere of Tim Duncan’s documentary

Manu Ginobili and Fabricio Oberto, as former players of the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA, participated last week in the world premiere of a new documentary about Tim Duncan.

“The Boy From St. Croix” (“The Boy from St. Croix”, see trailer in English below; configure the subtitle) had its premiere screening in recent days as part of the 32nd Annual Film Festival in Austin, Texas, United States.

Directed by Scott Duncan, Tim’s older brother, the film offers the first look at Duncan’s career and his connection to his native island of St. Croix (Virgin Islands), as told by himself.

As anticipated, it can be seen on Netflix starting at the end of the month.

In addition to new images of Duncan’s family life after his retirement, coaches, teammates and mentors, including Gregg Popovich and David Robinson, offer new perspectives on the Spurs legend.

Although Duncan himself was not present at the premiere screening at the Bullock Museum’s IMAX Theater, his partner Vanessa Macias said seeing images of his parents and his childhood could be emotional for him.

“I think it is very important for our family because he does not talk about himself and what is documented now is, as we know, third-hand,” Macias told the KSAT website.

“It’s going to be great, especially for the kids (the children) to see a lot of the different parts that maybe we’ve all missed,” he added.

Ginobili, who had also not yet seen the film, said he was very curious to know about Tim’s childhood.

“The St. Croix TD is the one I haven’t seen or witnessed, so that’s what excites me most about the movie,” said the man from Bahia.

“Where you grew up and your environment at such an important age, you know, being a child, a preteen or a teenager, really shapes you. So I’m really curious to see that side of him,” she added.

Oberto, who joined the Spurs for three seasons in 2005, now lives in San Antonio and continues to maintain a close relationship with both Tim and the Spurs organization twenty years later.

“Every time I see him, I learn something,” Oberto said, sharing the ways Tim has continued to help him in his work as an NBA analyst.

Scott Duncan, who previously sat down with KSAT for an interview ahead of the film’s release, said he is still “surprised” by the personal aspects of the documentary. (With information from KSAT).
