“The Eagles of the Republic”: the star and the raptors of the Egyptian regime

He amazes us with every film. The director of Egyptian origin and Swedish nationality – he was born in 1972 in Stockholm – Tarik Saleh amazed us so much with his political thriller “Cairo Confidential” in 2017 that we then awarded him the Étoile de Parisien for best foreign film of the year. Rebelote in 2022, with the remarkable “The Cairo Conspiracy”, this time a religious thriller, which won the Screenplay Prize at Cannes.

It was again selected in competition on the Croisette last May that the filmmaker unveiled “Les Aigles de la République”, in theaters this Wednesday, where he mixes the 7th art, politics and love stories.

A feature film carried by the director’s favorite actor, Fares Fares, who plays the actor George Fahmy, the most fashionable in Egypt whose productions meet with immense popular success. The stars of the big screen have an aura of demigods but although adored, Fahmy does not take abusive advantage of his celebrity, sharing himself between different film projects and a stormy relationship with a young girl (played by the Frenchwoman Lyna Khoudri).

Until the day when the power in place, which holds the country with an iron fist, asks the actor to play, in a propaganda film glorifying the regime, President Sissi – the same one who is currently at the head of the country. Unable to refuse because his family is threatened, Fahmy must navigate the dark twists and turns of this harsh and corrupt power on sight.

His ambivalent posture will prove even more complex because of an unexpected political event, but also because he begins an affair with the fascinating but enigmatic wife of the general who directs the film – an intriguing beauty played brilliantly by the all too rare Zineb Triki, heroine of the series “The Office of Legends”.

Fares Fares, fabulous actor

Phenomenal, the film – where almost everything is taken from reality, which is not likely to help Tarik Saleh’s relations with his country of origin, where he is prohibited from entering – does not spare the viewer with breathtaking suspense and constant twists and turns. We’ll let you discover the most astonishing thing that happens mid-film, so unexpected and sudden that you can’t hold back a cry of astonishment at the screen.

“The Eagles of the Republic” also doubles as an extraordinary ode to the 7th Art, as it was practiced in Egypt between the 1950s and 1970s, by transposing the subject to our days, with crazy scenes of filming atmosphere or popular jubilation in front of the cinematographic exploits of the actors and, above all, through the astonishing portrait of this magnificent actor, always between two schemes and two loves but with irresistible charm.

Once again, Fares Fares’ performance in this role constantly on the edge of the precipice is astonishing. What a fabulous actor!

Editor’s note:
