5 horror and suspense books for you to buy on Black Friday
If you like horror, mystery and suspense books, the team at Super separated 5 unmissable suggestions for shopping on Black Friday.
Frankensteinde Mary Shelley
Victor Frankenstein is a young Swiss scientist who discovers a method to create life from pieces of dead people. The revolutionary feat, however, soon gets out of his control and starts to haunt him. That’s right: the name is that of the creator, not the creature, which in the book is only called “monster”, “demon” and the like.
Frankensteinfirst published in 1818, is not only one of the greatest horror titles, alongside Dracula, by Bram Stoker, and The Doctor and the Monsterby Robert Louis Stevenson: he is also considered the founder of the science fiction genre.
The work addresses philosophical and political themes that dominated the first half of the 19th century, when technological advances revolutionized science and the Industrial Revolution began to forever change the way of life in England. Even more impressive is knowing that Mary Shelley wrote this classic when she was just 19 years old – and that the idea for the novel came about as a joke between friends (among them, the famous poet Lord Byron).
The story has just been adapted into a Netflix film, directed by Guillermo del Toro and with Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth in the cast. It’s worth reading before or after watching.

About the Bones of the Deadde Olga Tokarczuk
In the icy, remote mountains on the Polish-Czech border, retired teacher Janina Duszejko becomes an amateur detective when a series of strange deaths begin to occur in the quiet village. The woman believes that the animals in the region are killing humans to get revenge on the hunters and the mistreatment they suffer, but no one takes this idea seriously.
In that thriller by Polish Olga Tokarczuk, winner of the 2018 Nobel Prize for Literature, the introspective and reflective setting is the strong point. The protagonist, on the other hand, is purposefully uncharismatic.
Although the murders form the background of the story, don’t expect a mystery to the Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot: the narrative is slower and more philosophical, with reflections on man’s relationship with nature and the rights of animals.

And there were none leftby Agatha Christie
Ten strangers isolated on a remote island. An accusation that connects everyone in the group. An enigmatic poem that seems to predict the future. And a series of unexplained murders. Anyone can be the next victim, and anyone can be the killer.
The “queen of crime” has countless great mystery stories, but this isn’t the best known for nothing: the book has a frenetic and engaging pace and ends with one of the best twists in Agatha Christie’s career.
Published in 1939 under another title (which was changed because it was considered racist), And there was none left It is one of the best-selling books in history. Mandatory repertoire for suspense fans.

Dark Matterde Blake Crouch
A mix of science fiction, suspense and thriller. In the plot, scientist Jason Dessen, who studies quantum physics, is transported to a parallel universe where his life is completely different because of a single decision he made 15 years earlier.
The story explores real science concepts, such as the possibility of parallel realities (which we explain in this report).
The book is recent – it was published in 2016 – but it has already won over a legion of fans and was adapted in 2024 into an Apple TV series.

Or portrait of Dorian Graythe Oscar Wilde
This gem is the only novel written by Irishman Oscar Wilde. A first short version of the story was originally published in 1890, in the monthly magazine Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine. Wilde adapted it into a novel the following year.
The book revolves around the aristocrat Dorian Gray, whose portrait was painted by his friend Basil Hallward. Gray adopts a hedonistic outlook, believing that his beauty and lust are the only things worth living for. The character makes a pact so that his painting will age in his place, while he remains young and pursues a life of excess. The work brings reflections on the tireless search for beauty, its role in society and the usefulness of art.
