After a version with Tom Cruise that was a disaster, a new The Mummy film will premiere in 6 months – Cinema news

The new production will not look like the previous films in the fantasy adventure franchise.

Tom Cruise has managed to create an image around him that makes us forget about his failures, but he has them. One of the most recent and gigantic is The Mummy (2017). The film, directed by Alex Kurtzman, would be the beginning of a Universal monster cinematic universe titled Dark Universe. Despite already having some actors involved – Javier Bardem would play Frankenstein’s Creature – it never came to fruition. But that’s a thing of the past. Now it’s time to look to the future, and although we may have forgotten, there is a new version of The Mummy on the way. And with a Spanish actress as the protagonist.

The Mummy directed by Lee Cronin and produced by Blumhouse. In addition to Jason Blum – founder of Blumhouse – the project also includes James Wan, creator of the Conjuring franchise, in production work. Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, VerĂłnica FalcĂłn and May Calamawy lead the cast.

The project was announced in December 2024 and filming ended on June 24 of this year. Warner Bros. will be responsible for its distribution, which is a rarity, as The Mummy franchise has always been produced and distributed by Universal Pictures.

Cronin’s film was shot in Ireland and Spain and premieres in the United States in six months: on April 17, 2026. For now, details about the story are unknown, but when the announcement of Costa’s hiring was made, THR reported the following: “Costa and Reynor bring to life a couple who, together with their daughter, cross paths with the mummy.”

Cronin directed Death of the Devil: The Rise (2023) and Reynor is known for playing Christian, the boyfriend of Florence Pugh’s Dani in Midsommar (2019). Costa worked on Victoria (2015) and won the award for Best Leading Actress from the German Film Academy – she was the first Spanish woman to win a Lola -, she has the Goya for Best Leading Female Performance for Lullaby (2020) and participated in the Prime Video series The Wheel of Time (2021) giving life to Moghedien.

The Mummy franchise

Universal Pictures

The first The Mummy (1932) had Karl Freund directing and Boris Karloff playing the monster. More than six decades later and a few more monster films, Stephen Sommers’ saga starring Brendan Fraser arrived. The first two films, with Rachel Weisz in the female lead role and titled And the Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns (2001), are among the most beloved of the adventure and fantasy saga. His third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), featured Maria Bello as Weisz’s replacement. This trilogy had a spin-off series from The Scorpion King with Dwayne Johnson in the protagonist role in only the first of the five films.

Then came Cruise’s moment. The film grossed $409.2 million worldwide on a budget of $125 million. Yes. It was a commercial success, but the critics hated it. It has a 15% rating on RT. The Dark Universe was born and died at the same time.

“This won’t be like any Mummy movie you’ve seen before. I’m digging deep into the earth to unearth something very old and very scary,” Cronin warned in a statement about his version when the project was announced. Let’s hope he has better luck than Cruise.
