‘Zootopia 2’ marks a turning point for Disney animation with record opening box office

Bloomberg — A Walt Disney achieved the biggest global opening for an animated film in the company’s history, grossing US$559.5 million in worldwide ticket sales.

The film Zootopia 2 grossed more than $400 million internationally over the weekend.

It also grossed $158.8 million at the U.S. and Canadian box office over the Thanksgiving long weekend, and became the No. 1 domestic film, according to figures published Monday by Comscore.

Sequel to the 2016 film — about a rabbit and a fox who become partners in policing a city inhabited by mammals — Zootopia 2 represents a positive for Disney’s animation unit.

The performance comes after an uneven period in recent years, including box office success Moana 2 and disappointments like Wish e Strange World.

It’s also welcome news for movie theater chains, which were starved of hits for most of the fall until the release of Wicked: For Goodyes Universalfrom Comcast, on November 21.

The collection of Zootopia 2 in its first five days in the United States, it surpassed expectations of at least US$125 million from box office tracking company Boxoffice Pro. The film also broke a record in China, marking the biggest opening for an imported animation, according to Disney.

Zootopia 2 boosts Disney ahead of the premiere of Avatar: Fire and Ashby James Cameron, the third film in a franchise that features two of the highest-grossing films in Hollywood history.

Disney has the release of Avatar scheduled for December 19th, grossing just a few weeks at the box office before the end of the quarter.

Due to the timing and expense of promoting the film, Disney announced in November that the studio’s profits for the current quarter would be reduced by $400 million.
