During one of the countless concerts he gave in 1975, Bruce Springsteen, with his back to the audience, would have uttered an apostrophe that has become familiar to our ears: « You’re talking to me ? » (“Are you talking to me?”). Present in the crowd, Robert De Niro would have remembered it when improvising his most famous line, in Taxi Driver (1976), by Martin Scorsese. Assuming it is accurate, the anecdote clearly shows the extent to which the American musician has always been in dialogue with cinema, drawing inspiration from the films of some, inspiring the films of others in return.
This conversation is fueled by the release, Wednesday October 22, of Scott Cooper’s seventh feature film, Springsteen : Deliver Me From Nowhere. The director dwells on the genesis of Nebraska (1982), the “Boss’s” bone-chilling album, recorded in a bedroom the day after a triumphant tour, while he brooded over a raging depression.
