Alexandre Astier wants to release a long version of Kaamelott
Alexandre Astier has a long version of the first part of Kaamelott ready.
The filmmaker explained to Première magazine that the version currently being shown in cinemas is the one he prepared when theaters were demanding films “less than two hours long” in order to be able to broadcast “five screenings per day” when Covid came out while “the whole industry was in trouble”. And this “special Covid” version, which lasts 2h19, Alexandre Astier is not entirely satisfied with it, because “he is missing a quarter of an hour, twenty minutes”.
“That leaves me with a little regret,” explains Alexandre Astier, who adds: “So there will be another version.” For him, “you understand the film as it is today, but it’s a bit indigestible like that”.
However, you will have to wait a little before seeing it, because the director is a perfectionist. “We have to finalize the special effects and all that. So it’s not far from being ready, but I still want to go over it again, I still want to go back, I still want to be sure of my move,” explains Alexandre Astier, who also believes that “one or two scenes are missing.”
The director’s desire seems in any case ambitious as Kaamelott – Second part, part 1 has already attracted 452,000 spectators in the first five days of its release. “Ultimately, I would like to be able to replace the existing version with this one, even if it is difficult to move things when they are already in the pipeline,” adds Alexandre Astier. The first Kaamelott, released in 2021, had 1 million admissions. Note that the economic situation in 2025 is less favorable than four years ago.
