Andy Muschietti’s New Version Of IT Movies Gets Exciting New Update 6 Years Later

Andy Muschietti isn’t done with the IT franchise when it comes to the big screen.

Ahead of the season 1 finale of IT: Welcome to Derryon which he serves as an executive producer and co-creator, Andy Muschietti conducted an AMA on Reddit alongside his sister, co-creator, and co-EP Barbara Muschietti. While many questions focused on the siblings’ work with the IT franchise, one of the most popular was related to Andy’s past comments about a “supercut” IT movie merging the 2017 and 2019 films he directed into one.

In response to whether his extended cut with “hours of unused footage” was still happening, Andy Muschietti revealed his IT supercut is still in the works. Though he hasn’t had time to bring it to fruition yet, it’s still a project he has his eyes set on happening:

“Yes still a big dream of mine. Since we’ve been involved heavily in this show (IT: Welcome to Derry) we hadn’t had time to execute it. Crossing fingers.”

Considering Andy discussed an IT supercut movie back in 2019 following the second film’s release, it’s a relief the project hasn’t been abandoned over six years later. Rather, other work has taken precedence in the time since, including bringing to life HBO’s hit IT: Welcome to Derry prequel series.

IT (2017)

$702.8 million

IT Chapter Two (2019)

2 hours 49 minutes

$473.1 million

Updates on the IT supercut movie have been few and far between since the 2019 film, but a revival in interest is expected as the Muschiettis’ work on the franchise comes back into the spotlight with Welcome to Derry. Still, while the duo’s current focus will likely remain on the future of the series, with both discussing a three-season plan for IT: Welcome to Derrythe popularity of the property on the small screen could be translated to renewed demand on the big screen.

Currently, HBO has yet to officially renew IT: Welcome to Derry for season 2, so there likely won’t be much movement on a movie supercut until the TV show’s fate is decided. That also applies to any potential future IT movies, which have been discussed as unconfirmed possibilities by the Muschiettis after the season 1 finale.

That said, if IT continues to find prolonged success on HBO with Welcome to Derry, there’s more justification for Muschietti to finally convince Warner Bros. to bring his director’s supercut to fruition. With Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affairsimilarly combining Kill Bill: Volume 1 and Kill Bill: Volume 2 into a nearly five-hour-long single experience, recently performing well for a specialized limited theatrical release, there’s also the hope that IT could one day achieve a similar release in theaters.

If IT‘s supercut finally moves forward as Andy Muschietti still intends, the film is set to include scenes that were absent from the original movies’ theatrical and digital releases. That would entail over six hours of footage cut into one moviewhich comes just slightly under the full nearly-eight-hour runtime of Welcome to Derry season 1.
