As in the cold of the front: «My unseen tears» are projected

Born from letters remained in the family for years the documentary «My crying that cannot be seen»awarded by the Region and presented this afternoon on a giant screen in the Mo.Ca courtyard by the students of the Luzzago High School.


The work is the result of the winning project of the regional tender «Memory journeys for schools» and takes shape starting from Hector’s correspondencemilitary doctor during the First World War, and from that of Fabio and Aureliotwo young cousins ​​who died on the Carso when they were just over seventeen.

The spark

It was she who started the journey Anna Valentina Nordio18 years old, fifth year student at Luzzago. «The tender was proposed to us by Professor Andrea Boarelli – said the girl -. Talking to my parents they emerged my great-grandfather’s lettersmilitary field doctor. From there we started reading them and asked ourselves if that family memory could become a class project.” With the arrival of other letters, coming from more distant branches of the family, the work expanded: «By reading them, very current questionsas if today we could ever find ourselves leaving for a war.”

The documentary thus became a choral storybuilt by intertwining historical sources, images and testimonies. Also among the students involved Alessandro Bertonewhich entered the project at a later stage. «I mainly dealt with the letters of the two boys who died at the front – he explained -. Reading and analyzing them involved me a lot, especially during the interviews with Anna, her father and a close relative: it is a story that struck me a lot.”

The professor coordinated the educational path Andrea Boarelliliterature teacher at Luzzago. «The regional competition proposal seemed particularly significant to me – he said -. At the beginning we were a small group, then, after winning the first prize, the project expanded to the whole class and to other teachers. Was it is important to work on original sources and then go on the places of history, thanks to the fully financed trip.”

The journey

The route took the students between Brescia, Gorizia and the Karst, with the climb to Monte Sabotino accompanied by the CAI of Gorizia. An experience also enriched by the testimony of Fabio Lazzari of the Alpini group of Concesio, which helped the boys to contextualize life at the front during the Great War. From a cinematographic point of view the work was followed by Alessandro Abba Legnazziteacher of cinema language at Luzzago, director and documentary maker also awarded at the Turin Film Festival. “We built a narrative line – he explained – seeking a balance between research, filming and interviews, from Brescia to connections with other family members”.

A documentary that brings together private memory and collective history and which, as emerged from the discussion with the public, it speaks above all to today’s young peoplecalled to grapple with the questions left open by those letters.
