Byd surpasses Tesla and is leading in electric car sales in 2025
The scenario of electric and hybrid vehicle market leaders points to antagonism. While BYD announced the historic mark of $ 107 billion (approximately $ 590 billion) in sales in 2024, Tesla has a decline.
The Chinese automaker consolidated the world’s largest electrified vehicle manufacturer in 2024, exceeding the US rival for the first time. The strong pace remained at the turn of the year. The company sold 990,711 passenger vehicles in the first quarter of 2025, a 58.7% jump over the same period of the previous year. Of this total, 206,084 units were marketed outside China. Considering only electric cars, the manufacturer sold 416,388 vehicles, 39% more than in the 1st quarter of 2024.
BYD’s success is driven by plug-in hybrids, which accounted for 57.8% of sales in the quarter, representing 76% growth over the same period last year.

Negative
In contrast, Tesla faces unprecedented challenges. The manufacturer announced that it sold 336,681 units in the first three months of 2025, which represents a 12.9% drop compared to the same period as 2024. There are 79,707 vehicles less than BYD in the 1st quarter, making the Chinese the most selling electric cars in the world.

Europe is the main point of attention. In France, there was a 37% decrease in March, and in Sweden, 64%. Only in Norway, the new Model Y recovered breath, but insufficient to reverse the negative trend.
The vision shared by several global analysts is that the crisis goes beyond numbers. The controversial image of the brand’s CEO, Elon Musk, amid millionaire donations to far -right parties and US president’s tariff policies support, Donald Trump, generated protests and vandalism against Tesla concessionaires. “The brand has lost value quickly, something rare in automotive history,” said Ryan Brinkman, an analyst at the JP Morgan market agency.
