check out the review of Ari Aster’s new film

Criticism // Eddington ★★

Hatred on social media, natives in conflict (veiled) in New Mexico, justice and a flight over mandatory isolation in the face of lack of control with Covid-19. Director Ari Aster’s panel looks juicy, including the registration of citizens’ weapons; but, little by little, you get the impression that it results in the weight of those uninteresting messages that you leave aside on your cell phone. Combined with the excess of characters, and a focus that is not at all centered, the script delves into psychologisms and self-analysis of the fauna of types and demonstrates fragility, when bursting onto a large cinema screen.

Joaquin Phoenix tries to carry Eddington on his back, as Sheriff Joe, in constant friction with the mayor played by Pedro Pascal (in the middle of complete disinterest), the single father Ted, surprised by his wife’s disappearance, and who is arguing with Joe. Emma Stone confirms herself as opaque, leading the character who intensifies the conflict between the two men.

Instead of the typical doldrums of the city portrayed by Robert Altman, in A fortune of Cookie (1998), Ari Aster spices up the pretentious feature with a human hurricane, driven by collective annoyance at the death of George Floyd (in Minneapolis). Crimes are evident in Eddington, due to political complications, the virtual impunity guaranteed to the privileged and also due to traces of racism and pedophilia.

In the patchwork promoted by Ari Aster’s film, the highlights are the actress associated with Charlie Kaufman’s tapes, Deirdre O’Connell, in the role of Joe’s crazy mother-in-law and Vernon Peak (Austin Butler), with a speech about high social liberation. Between a foreshadowed killing, the result conspires to a modern western, along the lines of Quentin Tarantino (but which is not resolved) in which the masks fit (or not) on the skin of distraught sufferers of the pandemic.
