PREDATOR: WILDLANDSthe latest film in the iconic franchise PREDATORhit theaters on November 6 and quickly took first place at the global box office on its opening weekend, achieving the best worldwide opening in the almost 40-year history of the renowned action, science fiction and horror saga.
The man behind this success story is Dan Trachtenberg, who returns to directing after PREDATOR: THE HUNT – one of Disney+’s most successful releases in 2022, acclaimed by critics and the public – and animation Predator: Killer of Killersanother production in the franchise that was received with enormous enthusiasm on Disney+.
Em PREDATOR: WILDLANDSTrachtenberg not only consolidates his unique vision for the iconic saga, but also bets on an even bolder concept.
THE FOCUS ON THE MONSTER
Once again at the helm of a new film in the franchise, the director felt the need to innovate, to take the story to new territory. And that’s why he decided to explore a new perspective. “For the first time, we follow the monster”reveals Trachtenberg.
PREDATOR: WILDLANDS is the first film in the universe PREDATOR centered on the yautja. Dek, the protagonist, is the weakest of his clan and needs to prove his worth by hunting an invincible creature called Kalisk on the most dangerous planet in the galaxy.
Trachtenberg comments: “I wanted to give audiences an experience focused on the species and their culture. I wanted them to find a point of connection with the villains of this universe. It’s a harsh, brutal, clan-based culture. For the first time, we travel to their planet and see a little more of how they live.”
ENTERING NO WORLD TWO YAUTJA
For the filmmaker, delving into the heart of Yautja culture involved extensive development work, in collaboration with production design, cinematography, costume design, visual effects teams, among others.
In partnership with the renowned New Zealand studio Wētā Workshop, prosthetic costumes for the Predators and their weapons were created, with impressive detail. Furthermore, there was a deepening of his warrior culture and physical ability, reinforcing the specific characteristics of the Dek character as a member of the clan.
With filming taking place in New Zealand, the creative team took full advantage of the country’s lush natural beauty to bring the world of the Yautja to life, with a special focus on the rugged landscapes and dense jungles.
Trachtenberg also called on linguist Britton Watkins, a polyglot fascinated by languages who joined the project to create the official language of the Yautja. Watkins developed the grammatical structure, written alphabet, and phonetics completely distinct from any human language the public can recognize.
CONNECTING WITH THE UNEXPECTED
In addition to the fascinating world-building, Trachtenberg’s vision for PREDATOR: WILDLANDS relies heavily on the essence of the main characters and the bond they share, as well as the connection between them and the audience.
The director observes: “What I always hope from any film is that the audience connects with the characters and feels something for them. With PREDATOR: THE WILDERNESS, that expectation is even more special, because the film revolves around characters you would never, ever imagine ending up liking.”
This magical connection is due in large part to Fanning and Schuster-Koloamatangi, an acting duo of enormous talent… and even bigger hearts. “Dimitrius has a very special physical aptitude. So, in filming, he not only dedicated himself to the physical work, but also to the emotional aspect. It was incredible to see how far he went with the character”says Trachtenberg, describing Fanning as “extraordinary”, and possessing a unique combination of analytical mind, deep sensitivity, reflective power and impressive physical dexterity.
From the hands of Trachtenberg, PREDATOR: WILDLANDS It is the result of a unique combination that is already winning over audiences around the world.
PREDATOR: WILDLANDS is now available exclusively in theaters on IMAX, Dolby Cinema, RealD (3D), Cinemark XD, 4DX, ScreenX and premium screens worldwide.
