Director of The Conjuring 4 confirms if franchise will end
Even with impressive box office numbers, the franchise Conjuring is coming to an end. Director Michael Chaves confirmed in an interview with the ComicBook website that The Conjuring 4: The Last Ritual It will be the last chapter of the film series.
“It’s over. This is the final chapter — that’s why we call it The Last Ritual. It’s the last one. There will be no more films Conjuring. It’s absolutely the end”, declared Chaves, surprising fans of the horror universe.
Created more than a decade ago, the franchise has become one of the most popular of its kind, following paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, in cases inspired by true stories. Each film presents a new supernatural investigation faced by the couple.
Over the years, the main films and spin-offs, such as Annabelle e The Nunaccumulated more than US$2 billion in worldwide box office. The Conjuring 4: The Last Ritual debuted with a bang, grossing US$83 million in its first weekend — the biggest opening of the entire franchise. Around the world, the film has already grossed more than US$470 million.
The Conjuring will become a series
The Conjuring 4: The Last Ritual may even be the last film in the franchise, but the story will continue in an HBO Max series – the project began development in 2023, but will only now get off the ground.
Nancy Won will serve as writer, executive producer and showrunner. Additionally, Peter Cameron and Cameron Squires were tapped to write the script for the series.
Peter Safran remains executive producer, with James Wan’s Atomic Monster producing.
Details about the plot are kept secret.
The franchise began in 2013 with the first The Conjuring, starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, who face different supernatural phenomena.
In addition to the four main films, the universe expanded with the spin-offs Annabelle (three films) and The Nun (two films so far). Combined, all titles have already raised around US$2.5 billion worldwide.
The Conjuring series does not have a premiere date.
