Director reveals secrets of the practical effects that create the illusions of ‘Master’s Trick 3’
This Thursday (13), “Trick of the Master – The 3rd Act”, the third film in the acclaimed criminal franchise, finally makes its long-awaited debut on national screens.
Started in 2010, the saga, which has grossed US$687 million at the global box office, gained prominence in the film industry for its innovative combination of stylized illusionism, unexpected twists and scenes surrounded by great visual creativity.
Now, the new chapter intends to take this concept to another level, prioritizing the use of practical effects to enhance the feeling of realism of the tricks. In a recent interview with GQ magazine, director Ruben Fleischer (‘Venom’) commented on the decision to avoid excessive use of CGI, revealing that mobile and manipulable sets were built – like a rotating room – so that the audience could perceive a logic behind what is seen:
“We actually had a revolving room, an effect that goes back to Fred Astaire dancing on the ceiling. It’s very classic Hollywood. I wanted everything to have a tangible quality… to make sure everything we did was justifiable and could be explained – without leaving the audience thinking, ‘Are they sorcerers or magicians?’.”
Speaking to the Boxoffice Pro portal, the filmmaker also mentioned the creation of a model of the Ames Room, an environment that produces an optical illusion in which people appear to change completely in size according to their position in the room:
“The most fun (if not also the most challenging) (scenes) to film were in the rooms of the castle. There’s Ames’s room with the unevenness that many people know, but we built it as if it were part of an old French mansion. All the objects in the scene had to be 3D printed to fit perfectly into the perspective in which they appear in the frame. It was really cool, but also a challenge to get the exact perspective right – it affected the positioning of the camera and everything,” added Fleischer.
