At the end of the new film, Ares (Jared Leto) manages to get the Permanence Code from Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) and returns to the real world to defeat Athena (Jodie Turner-Smith). With the code, he manages to survive outside the Grid forever, while the villain – and everything that leaves the virtual world without the code – ends up disintegrating after 29 minutes. With this, the authorities discover that whoever was behind the attacks on Encom is Julian Dillinger (Evan Peters), the CEO of Dillinger System.
Before being arrested, however, Julian manages to teleport to Grid and avoids being caught by the authorities. A few weeks pass and Ares, now living in the real world, comes into contact with Eve (Greta Lee), who resumed his position as CEO of Encom. He explains that he is searching for a new purpose, and it is at this moment that the camera shows that he has photos of Sam Flynn in his hands (Garrett Hedlund) and Quorra (Olivia Wilde) – protagonists of Tron: Or Legacy -, who are missing after Sam resigns from Encom, suggesting that Ares’ new mission is to find them both.
In the post-credits scene, we see the moment when Julian materializes inside Grande. As before he only used his voice to communicate with programs in the real world, this is the first time that the villain finds himself in the cyber universe.
Upon arriving at the Grid, Julian sees a program disc presenting itself to him. When he touches it, a voice calls him Sark, the name of the program played by David Warner em Tron: An Electronic Odyssey (1982) and one of the villains of the original feature.
The scene indicates that the voice that calls Julian Sark is that of Master Control (or MCP), the main villain of the first film. Case Tron: Ares gets a sequel, we can see the return of the MCP as the franchise’s big villain, now with Julian Dillinger at his side.
