Does Raven Rock really exist? This is the explanation behind the most important setting of House of Dynamite – Cinema News

Located in Pennsylvania, the underground military complex that appears in Kathryn Bigelow’s new film has its origins in the Cold War, created to maintain the US government in the event of a nuclear attack.

At the end of House of Dynamite, the new film by Kathryn Bigelow available on Netflix, the planet is on the brink of nuclear war. Government agents seek shelter at the Raven Rock Mountain Complex, a gigantic underground bunker in Adams County.

Unlike other fictional elements in the feature film, the location is real. Built during the Cold War, the complex was designed to guarantee the continuity of the North American government in the event of a nuclear attack — which, in the film’s universe, finally comes to fruition.

Raven Rock is one of the many true spaces that serve as the basis for the script written by Noah Oppenheim. The film mixes authentic locations and military bases camouflaged under acronyms, reflecting the medium’s own bureaucratic language. As Daniel L. Karbler, former head of US Strategic Command and technical advisor to the production, explains, “we use acronyms more than proper names in everyday military life. It becomes part of our vocabulary” (via TUDUM).

Where were the House of Dynamite scenes filmed?

Filming took place on three sets built in New Jersey, representing the White House, United States Strategic Command and Fort Greely, Alaska. The exterior scenes of Alaska were shot in Iceland, at a fast pace due to the lighting conditions. “We arrived and said, ‘We’re out of time, put on your costumes and let’s shoot.’ This brought a sense of urgency,” actor Anthony Ramos told the Tudum website.

Greta Lee recorded her scenes in Pennsylvania, during the reenactment of the 161st anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. “It was 40 degrees, the cannons were firing and the audience didn’t even know it was filming. It all felt very guerrilla, and I was impressed by Kathryn’s calmness,” said the actress.

In addition to Raven Rock, other strategic points mentioned in the film include the White House Situation Room, the Presidential Emergency Operations Center (PEOC), the Pentagon, the US Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) and Fort Greely, the base responsible for nuclear defense missiles.

At the moment, Dynamite House occupies 1st place among the most watched productions of the moment in streaming.
