Ed Gein, from “Monster”, inspired three horror classics; see which ones
The new season of Netflix’s true crime series “Monster” tells the story of Ed gonnaserial killer who became known as “the Butcher of Plainfield”.
Born in the city of Plainfield, Wisconsin, USA, he was a reserved farmer who hid macabre secrets on his property. He was responsible for exhuming the bodies of nine women buried in the cemetery and decided to keep parts of them in his home. Gein was also convicted of two murders, and is considered a suspect in others.
The criminal possessed clothes, furniture, a lamp and face masks made from the human skin of his victims.
In addition to the true crime directed by Ryan Murphy, which recently premiered on Netflix, Gein’s bizarre story has already inspired other productionsinclusive three horror films considered classics of the genre.
“Psycho” (1960)
Alfred Hitchcock’s film and Robert Bloch’s novel of the same name, published in 1959, were inspired by Ed Gein’s obsession with his mother to create the fictional character Norman Bates.
In real life, Gein stated that it was the death of his mother, a strict and very religious woman, that caused him to go crazy and start committing crimes in an attempt to incorporate her.
“The Silence of the Lambs” (1991)

The film directed by Jonathan Demme is based on the novel of the same name written by Thomas Harris, who based his character Buffalo Bill on real-life serial killers.
The film’s antagonist’s goal of creating a “female costume” made from the skin of his victims was based on Gein’s actions.
“The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” (1974)

One of the most famous slasher films in horror cinema, the film directed by Tobe Hooper has as its villain Leatherface (in literal translation, “leather face”), known for his mask made from the human skin of his victims’ faces.
The director himself has already stated that he was inspired by the story he heard as a child when they discovered the crimes of Gein, who lived in a town neighboring Hooper.
