Ethan Hawke promises “one of the best movies ever made”… but no one knows what it is yet
In an interview with the Today program, the actor did not mince words when referring to his next collaboration with the filmmaker:
“It’s going to be one of the best movies ever made.”
A decade of movies… and a promise
This new project will be the tenth film that Hawke and Linklater have made together. A figure that is not minor if one takes into account that their shared filmography includes fundamental titles such as the trilogy Before dawn, before sunset y before nightfallin addition to the celebrated Boyhood.
“Everything we have done so far has been a preparation for what is to come. The tenth will be the best,” said Hawke, fully aware of the weight of such a statement. When the interviewer asked him if he didn’t feel dizzy to express himself in those terms, the actor was even more forceful:
“I’m not ashamed to say it. It doesn’t make me nervous.”
A dream project since 1998
As Hawke himself explained, this film has been on his mind since 1998. “We’ve been thinking about this story since then. Richard even before that. He’s dreamed about this film for years and it’s going to be incredible,” he said.
For now, details are minimal. Hawke only confirmed that it will be a period story, without revealing either the historical context or the narrative focus. Taking into account the director’s sensitivity to the passage of time, memory and life experience, the expectation only grows.
Premiere planned for 2027
The wait, yes, will not be eternal. Hawke announced that filming will conclude next year and that the premiere is scheduled for 2027. “I will return to this program in about 18 months to promote it,” he promised with a laugh.
After decades exploring love, identity, youth and maturity together, Hawke and Linklater seem convinced that this new project will be the culmination of a unique artistic relationship. If they fulfill even a part of what they promise, cinema could be facing one of those rare events that are remembered for generations.
