JAMES CAMERON ALMOST DIRECT WICKED
During a recent appearance on the podcast The Town with Matt Belloni (via Deadline), Cameron revealed that he almost agreed to direct a film adaptation of Wicked. Around 2010, he sat down at the table with Universal Pictures to discuss the terms of the contract, but ended up abandoning the idea because, in his words, “he couldn’t find the music”.
“The types of films I like to watch are, say, there or even Wicked”began the filmmaker. “I almost did Wicked back then. I really love the story, I mean, The Magic of Oz It’s one of my favorite films. That’s been about 15 years ago,” he added.
During the conversation, the director of Aliens, The Rescue also stated that, despite the denial, he does not completely rule out working with a musical in the future.

OTHER ACTRESSES HAVE TRIED TO ADAPT WICKED
It’s worth noting that Cameron wasn’t the first celebrity to back out of adapting Wicked. Over the years, Whoopi Goldberg was one of the actresses who tried to bring the musical to the big screen, followed by Demi Moore, Claire Danes, Salma Hayek, Laurie Metcalf, Michelle Pfeiffer, Emma Thompson and Nicole Kidman.
In 2024, director Jon M. Chu was successful in the endeavor, casting Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in the roles of Elphaba and Glinda, respectively. After great success, the production received a sequel the following year: Wicked: Part II, which is currently showing in theaters.
