Fire and Ashes’ debuts tepidly at the US box office
‘Avatar: Fire and Ash‘ finally arrived in theaters around the world, but got off to a lukewarm start at the North American box office.
The film grossed $12 million in Thursday previews and $25 million on Friday.
On Saturday, it raised around US$28 milliona drop of 23% compared to Friday (counting preview numbers), which should result in a total debut of US$88 million.
This difference between Saturday’s and Friday’s box office, including previews, is exactly the same as ‘Aquaman‘ in 2018, with a drop of 23%. ‘Avatar: The Path of Water‘ saw a 17% drop on Saturday, totaling $44.3 million on its first day. If this opening continues in the United States, it will be the seventh best opening of December, behind Spider-Man: No Way Home ($260.1 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($247.9 million), Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($220 million), Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ($177.3 million), Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ($155 million) and Avatar: The Path of Water ($134.1 million).
If you end the weekend with US$88 millionit will be a very big drop compared to the opening of the second film in the franchise, with US$134.1 million.
Em 2009, ‘Avatar‘ debuted with US$77 million and, just like ‘Avatar: The Path of Water‘, ended up raising more than US$2 billion worldwide.
Worldwide,’Avatar: Fire and Ash‘ should raise around US$340-380 million in its first weekend at the worldwide box office.
For comparison, the second film, ‘Avatar: The Path of Water‘, opened with US$444 million in this same period, in 2022.
The expectation is that the new feature film James Cameron supere a live-action of ‘Lilo & Stitch‘ ($341M), and becomes the second biggest global debut of the year – behind only animation ‘Zootopia 2‘ (US$560.3M).
Internationally, production should total around US$250-275 million.
