Fire and Ashes’ exactly the way James Cameron wants

Behind every new Avatar movie is an epic fantasy story and a technological marvel. For ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’, the highly anticipated third installment of the saga that premieres today, up to 45 different formats have been distributed that will be shown in cinemas.

Among so many possibilities there is a format that is preferred by James Cameron to watch the film: Cinitya Chinese invention of which Spain can boast of being at the forefront internationally along with the Asian giant. The format combines up to seven technologies including 3D, 4K, high frame rate (HFR), high brightness and high dynamic range (HDR). Its presence in our theaters is somewhat higher than that of IMAX, with 11 rooms that play it.

The 11 also have in common the same multiplex chain, Odeon. The brand has made a strong commitment to this format, introducing it in Madrid (Odeon Sambil in Leganés and two rooms in Odeon Alcalá Norte), Barcelona (Odeon Vilanova), Girona (Odeon Girona), Bizcaia (Odeon Ballonti), Cádiz (Odeon Bahía Plaza), León (Odeon Bahía Plaza), Coruña (Odeon Narón), Alicante (Odeon Alicante) and Avilés (Odeon Parque Astur).

Since 2023, five theaters in Spain have operated to show films such as ‘Wicked’ or ‘Mufasa’ in this way, while the remaining six have opened with the premiere of James Cameron’s film in mind. “I think it’s a superior format, and the Avatar films complement the Cinity format perfectly”the filmmaker said in a video.

Not everything is perfect with Cinity, mind you. The aspect ratio of these screens is 2:39:1, which is much more panoramic than the 1:85:1 of the IMAX theaters in cinemas such as Kinépolis in Madrid, Kinépolis in Valencia or Cinesa Diagonal Mar in Barcelona. For some, the immersion of IMAX screens (which offer more images above and below) may be greater than that of 3D. Be that as it may, with any of these rooms a premium experience is offered.
