Five must-see horror movies for this Halloween
Horror movies released in 2025.
Halloween is the best time to look for scares and the cinema is an incredible place to get them. Here we leave you five recommendations for films released in 2025. to see this October 31.
When we sit down to watch horror stories, we look at something that does not happen in reality, but that makes us alert or that shows the dark part of our humanity. In these films there is space for social criticism, but they are also the terrain to talk about death, something that we generally ignore, and If there is a time to reflect on this topic, every year, it is the end of October and beginning of November..
Uno, ‘V/H/S Halloween’
The eighth film in the V/H/S franchise arrived this year with more of the same, but with a shocking twist. These films are an anthology of short films -almost always told with video cameras or telephones- that sometimes have or are not related to each other and on this occasion all the stories intersect with Halloween.
They go from less to more, from haunted houses, to creatures that punish those who do mischief, even to the existence of cruel demons and child murderers that really chill the blood. And the final two shorts are the most compelling, for what they count and demonstrate.
The segment Kidprintwritten and directed by Alex Ross Perry, is pure horror and talks so much about cruelty towards children and how everyone can be fooled into thinking what is not.. For your part Home hauntby Micheline Pitt-Norman & RH Norman, recovers the horror of the films of the 80s, when a Halloween fan – that neighbor who makes a haunted house every year for the people of the neighborhood to enjoy – plays a forbidden record on his record player and that allows demons and spirits to jump and make all the elements of his Halloween decoration become dangerous.
Dos, ‘The Surrender’
Julia Max has directed this supernatural horror film with Colby Minifie – known for her role in ‘The Boys‘-, in which a daughter returns to her childhood home because her father is dying and she must give her mother a hand with the process. Something complicated, taking into account that the relationship between the two was never the best.
With ‘The Surrender’, Max makes a film in which half the time he builds the tension between mother and daughter and how they both try to do their best to not get carried away by strong emotions; but then, when what was going to happen happens, the mother shows her cards: she has spent all her savings on a kind of witch who will perform an occult ritual to bring her husband back to life.
What happens from that moment on is unexpected and completely terrifying. It is not known what will happen and as the film progresses and the consequences of the actions become clearit becomes clear that the greatest horror is that of loss and that grief can be a path of much greater sadness if it is experienced alone.
Tres, ‘Good boy’
Since the trailer for this film came out, sold as a horror film starring and told from the perspective of a dog, everyone wanted to know if what always happens in horror films happened: Is the dog going to die or suffer? The answer is only revealed at the end of the film.
The truth is that this first film by Ben Leonberg – in which his dog, Indy, appears – gets it right. because it makes the dog act better than many humans. Because Indy does not understand what is happening, he only perceives what is dangerous in his own way and what the trailer seems to tell us; so there’s a little trick there. Of course, there will be things that are not going to be clarified and how could a dog understand them? If this were a movie told from the perspective of human beings, It would be one of the most boring things in the galaxy.
Cuatro, ‘The Ugly Stepsister’
The Norwegian Emilie Blichfeldt has included two important things in her debut film: she has turned the story of Cinderella on its head and has focused on one of the stepsisters, taking her to the realm of a body horror more than worthy of David Cronenberg, and in doing so has taken the same themes that are discussed in ‘The Substance’, by Coralie Fargeat, and has resolved them in a better way.
This film can be repulsive, because it shows everything that a young woman, Elvira, has to do to become attractive and be taken into account by a young prince, because she is under the pressure of ending the financial problems of her house.
Furthermore, Elvira wants to be accepted, and that obsession will be reflected in her suffering.. ‘The Ugly Stepsister’ is terrifying because of what it shows, because of the risk that certain very strong scenes pose for some viewers and because its setting is a universe where everything is a search for status, the breeding ground for this type of very current terror.
Cinco, ‘Weapons’
Perhaps it is the most powerful horror film of this year with an ending that makes you laugh. ‘Weapons’ was written and directed by Zach Cregger and tells the mystery behind the disappearance of a group of children, who got up from their beds at dawn and left their houses to an uncertain direction.
Cregger decided to make a horror film to tell the hell that alcoholism is, for those who suffer from it and for the people close to the drinker. and for that she uses a simple metaphor: a witch comes to a city with a ritual that allows her to control people and turn them into a kind of zombies that will do what she wants, turning them into weapons. A kind of Pied Piper of Hamelinbut much more terrifying.
This is a movie in which many characters commit despicable acts and the vast majority will hurt others, even by omission. With a non-linear narrative, ‘Weapons’ tries to explain to us how human beings can harm those they love mostbecause that is inevitable. Maybe that’s the real terror.
