GM and Volvo readjust to increase their production in the United States

The slowdown in demand for electric vehicles combined with the challenge of customs prices continues to force car manufacturers to review their plans. General Motors and Volvo are two other examples.

The first will ultimately use its Orion factory, Michigan, to make Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500 and Cadillac Escalade from 2027. The news, first reported by Detroit Free Presswas confirmed yesterday by GM.

The factory in question was initially to assemble electric vehicles, but it will rather be used to support the production of petrol models for which demand remains very strong.

This decision does not affect other factories that make the Silverado, Sierra and Escalade. However, it must be remembered that GM has already announced its intention to reduce the activities of its assembly plant in Oshawa, Ontario, which will go from three to two quarters of work this fall. This produces Silverado 1500 and Silverado HD.

In June, the manufacturer mentioned that he was also going to increase the production of petrol vehicles to his fairfax factories, in Kansas, and Spring Hill, in Tennessee. The Chevrolet Equinox and Blazer will be assembled there, respectively.

Meanwhile, at Volvo …

At the beginning of April, after the United States announced new 25% customs tariffs on vehicles produced abroad, the new CEO of Volvo, Håkan Samuelsson, spoke of increasing the number of models and copies built on American soil.

Today, Volvo has announced that its best seller, the XC60, will begin to be manufactured at the Ridgeville factory, in South Carolina, towards the end of 2026. Also, according to sources cited by Automotive News, lE XC90 with three rows of seats should follow in late 2028. The two models are currently imported from Sweden.

The Ridgeville factory, which has replaced the production of the S60 sedan with the Volvo Ex90 electric SUVs and Polestar 3, is largely underused at present. The addition of the XC60 and XC90 with petrol and hybrids would bring it closer to its maximum capacity of 150,000 vehicles per year.
