Hachiko, explanation of the devastating ending of the film with Richard Gere
During the finale of Hachiko we see Hachi, now elderly and visibly worn by time, still not stopping going every day to wait for Parker’s return to the station. His body is tired, his step uncertain, but his habit remains unchanged: he arrives punctually at the entrance and waits for the master who will never return.
Commuters and station workers continue to recognize him and take care of him, who has now become a silent symbol of loyalty. Kate, Parker’s widow, returns to visit her husband’s grave after many years spent away from the city. Accompanied by Ken, he goes to the station and meets Hachistill there, in the same place where he had said goodbye to Parker for the last time. Faced with the dog’s perseverance, Kate fully understands how deep and unique the bond between her husband and Hachi was. Moved, his gaze falls on the Akita and remains with him, sharing that wait that will never have an earthly conclusion.
On a cold winter evening, Hachi, exhausted and cold, he collapses in front of the station. As he slowly closes his eyes, his mind retraces the happy moments spent with Parker: the walks, the runs, the farewells and the daily meetings. In his last dream, Hachi finally sees Parker come out of the station, smile at him and call out to him. The two are reunitedrunning towards each other, sealing a bond that goes beyond life. In the present, Ronnie concludes his story at school. After the applause of his companions, he leaves the building and walks with his dog, also an Akita named Hachi, near the same station, where the story of loyalty of the first Hachi remains alive in his memory.
