What are the best films to watch on HBO Max in December 2025?

The Daughters of Doctor March

In the United States, during the Civil War, 4 sisters from the middle class face the difficulties of daily life in this time of conflict. The reasonable Mege, the intrepid Jo, the charitable Beth and the proud May live in the protective and caring shadow of their mother Marnee and her aunt March. But the meeting of their neighbor Laurie will transform the first emotions of the debutante ball into real love stories…

This new adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s literary classic – following versions from the 1910s, 1930s, 1940s and 1990s – is a heartwarming melodrama that will bring a smile to your eyes as well as tears. Director and screenwriter Greta Gerwig (Barbie, Frances Ha) breathes a new soul into this version and offers a powerful updating of the themes of the original book. The icing on the cake is that the casting is superb: Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, TimothĂ©e Chalamet, Bob Odenkirk…

Twisters

A former tornado chaser, Kate is still traumatized by her encounter with a tornado when she was a student. Now she prefers to study storm behavior from the safety of New York. But when her friend Javi asks her to test a new tornado detector, she agrees to return to the heart of the action. She then meets the charming and reckless Tyler Owens, famous for his tornado chasing videos posted on social networks. As storm season reaches its peak, tornadoes of unprecedented magnitude are putting lives at risk.

Both a sequel and a reboot of the famous 1996 “disaster movie”, Twisters is indeed the great thrill show that it claims to be. The film thus assumes its role as a nostalgic roller coaster and delivers an exhilarating and successful experience. If this sequel does not avoid the same narrative flaws as the original film, it offers a generous spectacle for the retinas, with a charming cast carried by Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell.

Winter Break

Winter 1970: Mr. Hunham is a professor of ancient history at a prestigious private boys’ high school in New England. Pedantic and gruff, he is appreciated neither by his students nor his colleagues. As Christmas approaches, Mr. Hunham is asked to stay on campus to monitor the handful of residents confined there. Soon there will be only one left: Angus, a 1st grade student who is as gifted as he is insubordinate. Too recently bereaved by the death of her son in Vietnam, Mary, the establishment’s cook, prefers to stay away from the celebrations. She completes this improbable trio.

With the holiday season upon us, there’s nothing like one of the best recent Christmas movies to have a good time. You will undoubtedly be won over by this film with its bittersweet tone which turns into a tender and improbable adventure. A Christmas tale of those left behind, this comedy tinged with exquisite melancholy by Alexander Payne (Sideways, The Descendants) is also and above all carried by an irresistible trio of actors: Paul Giamatti, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa. A nugget that will leave you with tears in your eyes and a smile on your lips.

Boogie Nights

In 1977, young Eddie Adams was a dishwasher in a fashionable nightclub in the San Fernando Valley, a suburb of Los Angeles. His family life is not rosy between a mute father and a hysterical mother who accuses him of being a failure. It was then that he met Jack Horner, who would propel him into the world of porn cinema. In an age where sex is harmless pleasure and pleasure is an industry, Eddie becomes an international star under the name Dirk Diggle.

Avant One battle after another, There Will Be Blood et Magnoliadirector Paul Thomas Anderson created the event with Boogie Nights and its brilliant dive into the world of 70s porn. The portrait of an era of freedom, served by a formidable gallery of characters and a five-star cast: Mark Wahlberg, Julianne Moore, Burt Reynolds, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Don Cheadle… A classic to see without delay.

SOS FantĂ´mes

The sudden increase in paranormal phenomena worries the residents of New York. Ghosts are wreaking havoc in the streets of the city! Peter, Raymond and Egon, three young researchers in parapsychology, decide to start their own company: Ghostbusters. The ectoplasms had better watch out because our three merry fellows will be happy to capture them using their latest electronic equipment.

This first part of the now legendary saga has lost none of its charm and has everything to please. The scenario, both original and coherent, is based on a dream cast and special effects which, despite their age (the film dates from 1984), still work just as well. Director Ivan Reitman has perfectly mastered the recipe for a successful science fiction comedy: humor, rhythm and inventiveness. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson form an irresistible quartet, combining casualness and biting humor from start to finish. Add to that a New York transformed into a playground for crazy ghosts, unforgettable spectral apparitions and cult lines… In short, it’s cult.

Spider-Man : New Generation

The film tells the adventures of Miles Morales, an African-American and Puerto Rican teenager who lives in Brooklyn and struggles to integrate into his new middle school in Manhattan. But Miles’ life becomes complicated when he is bitten by a radioactive spider and discovers superpowers. At the same time, the city’s most formidable criminal mastermind, the Kingpin, has developed a nuclear particle accelerator capable of opening a portal to other universes.

A true declaration of love to Spider-Man and his universe, New Generation offers a fresh, astonishing adventure with magnificent visual ambition, mixing 2D and 3D with inventiveness. A festival for the retina and for the heart, with characters written with respect and intelligence, and which also won the Oscar for best animated film upon its release. A little masterpiece that revolutionized its industry and widened the narrative horizons of Spider-Man. A masterpiece, a true one.

Furiosa: a Mad Max saga

In a world in decline, young Furiosa is torn from the Green Earth and captured by a horde of bikers led by the fearsome Dementus. As she tries to survive the Desolation and Immortan Joe, and find her way home, Furiosa has only one obsession: revenge.

Less surprising and impressive than awesome Mad Max : Fury Road, Furiosa: a Mad Max saga nonetheless remains a great success and a very solid prequel. The film thus achieves the feat of being a perfect gateway for newbies to the universe, and much more than a simple bonus for veterans of the license. The rhythm is once again very well thought out, and there is plenty to take in, between explosive scenes and necessary rest. Witness!

The creative and inventive Michel Gondry (The Science of Dreams) enhances a brilliant screenplay by Charlie Kaufman (In the shoes of John Malkovich) to sign one of the most beautiful love stories in cinema. An adventure between dream and reality of disarming accuracy and poetry, which returns to the tumult of love and the touching paradoxes of the human being. At the heart of the film, Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet deliver one of the best performances of their careers. A timeless jewel.

Moonlight

After growing up in a tough neighborhood in Miami, Chiron, a young man tries to find his place in the world.

Sublime fresco spread over twenty years, Moonlight shocked the whole world when it was released in 2016, winning the Oscar for best film in the process. A deserved reward for this story of a young African-American struggling to live his homosexuality in the face of general adversity. Beyond the themes addressed, more current than ever, the film shines through the performances of its actors (Mahershala Ali in the lead) and particularly well-crafted photography by cinematographer James Laxton and director Barry Jenkins.

127 hours

On April 26, 2003, Aron Ralston set off for a hike in the Utah gorges. He is alone and has not informed anyone of his excursion. An experienced mountaineer, he collects the most beautiful peaks in the region. However, deep in a remote canyon, the unthinkable happens: above him, a rock breaks away and traps his arm in the rock wall. Here he is trapped, threatened with dehydration and hypothermia, prey to hallucinations…

Directed in an inventive and unbridled way by Danny Boyle (28 days later, Slumdog Millionaire), 127 hours is a mind-blowing true story, and a film of adventure and tension, with existential and poetic echoes. Both an atypical and incredible story, and a reflection on life, human connections, our responsibilities and the mark we want to leave on our lives. Exhilarating, disturbing, unmissable.
