One of the things that most satisfies authors and directors is that their works provoke debates and reflections among the public. Throughout her career, writer Colleen Hoover opens up a lot of room for discussion through very controversial choices. If It Wasn’t Fosse Você, the newest adaptation of his work, touches on the wound with a drama worthy of a soap opera.
In the plot, the already troubled relationship between Morgan Grant (Allison Williams) and her teenage daughter Clara (Mckenna Grace) is severely impacted after a tragic accident causes the death of Clara’s father and Morgan’s sister. Crossed by grief, the protagonist discovers that the two were having an affair and, trying to protect Clara, hides this secret from the girl.

This decision is already questionable in itself and has been dividing opinions among readers since the novel was released in 2019. Its culmination is that Morgan throws several letters exchanged between her sister and her husband into the fire, destroying any evidence of betrayal.

During the filming of Regretting You, Allison Williams — who plays Morgan and also serves as the film’s executive producer — was shocked that the rest of the cast thought her character’s attitude was reasonable, while she “couldn’t emphasize enough that I would have made the opposite choice.” In an exclusive interview with I LoveCinemarecalled that the subject generated a debate among the creative team:
“It’s the most controversial scene in the book, people love talking about this issue on Tik Tok. I have a very strong opinion on the subject, but I was alone. Nobody agreed with me. Everyone was like ‘No…She should burn the letters’. That’s insanity,” says Williams.
The Girls actress also added that she only managed to overcome the situation when they decided to record two versions of the scene, just in case.
“I insisted that they record both versions: one where she burns and the other where she gives up. Of course, we ended up using the one from the book, but I wanted to keep it just in case”, he details.
If It Wasn’t For You opens today, October 23rd, in Brazilian cinemas.
