It’s been 15 years since we last saw the terrifying Freddy Krueger in action. Nightmare on Elm Streetwith Jacky Earle Haley as the villain, planned to relaunch the franchise with a new cast, but the criticism simply killed any intention. While there are no plans (or at least not public ones) for a new Freddy Krueger, an old connoisseur of the story claims that Jim Carrey could live up to the expectations.

A worthy substitute?

During his time on the podcast Development Hell (via), Chuck Russell, co-writer and director of Nightmare on Hell Street 3was questioned about the possibility of reviving the character. In his words, there is only one Freddy, and that is Robert Englund, who played him several decades ago. However, he is aware that Hollywood does not let its most successful stories rest, which is why he even dared to propose a “replacement.”

“Jim, in my opinion, could do almost anything if he put his heart into it. For Jim to do it, we would have to do something that would be a new leap in the Elm Street saga, something similar to what Wes did with his meta-movie.”The new nightmare“I think Jim would only consider it, and I would only consider taking advantage of it, if there was a bold new direction for Elm Street.”

Founded in 1984, Nightmare on hell street It was the start of a successful franchise, which became more fanciful as it progressed. In fact, the aforementioned New Nightmare talks about the making of a film about Freddy Krueger, and how he invades the real world to scare the actors in it. Furthermore, in many scenes he recreated what was seen during the “original” installments.

¿Y Robert Englund?

A couple of years ago, the original performer stressed that he was “too old and thin to play Freddy now,” which destroyed the hopes of many fans. He added that it would be impossible for him to do the fight scenes for more than one take, and also that his neck, back, and arthritis would not be effective in scaring both the audience and the characters. “So I have to hang up the suit, but I would love to make a cameo.”he told Variety.

Likewise, Englund gave a possible candidate to replace him: Kevin Bacon. He highlighted his physical ability, and also his respect for horror films, as elements that made him ideal for the role.

Curiously, Jim Carrey has not tackled horror films very often. The closest he came was when he starred in Number 23: The revelationdirected by Joel Schumacher, and in which the possible relationship of said figure with some tragedies is addressed. In addition, he also pitched a horror film with the Daniels, directors of Everything everywhere at the same time. His idea was a movie found footage about the alleged paranormal events after the filming of A dumber couple, but it was never realized.

In recent years, various remakes of Nightmare on hell street They have sought to take shape, but none have succeeded. Currently, the rights to the films are in the hands of Wes Craven’s family, while New Line Cinema (a company part of Warner Bros.) maintains the rights for international distribution. Both parties would have to cooperate to make a possible film.
