Julia Roberts is moved by new Brazilian film: ‘It will change you’

The actress not only praised the work, but was also one of the project’s supporters, through her production company, Red Om Films. “Manas” is set on Marajó Island, in Pará, and delves into the drama of 13-year-old Marcielle (Jamilli Correa), who decides to break the cycle of violence that haunts her family and the women in her community. The work combines realism and lyricism to narrate an awakening — both individual and collective.

Marianna Brennand makes her feature film directorial debut with the work. Another big name in Hollywood, Sean Penn, 65, was also involved in the project as executive producer. The actor and director highlighted the cultural and social impact of “Manas”, comparing it to great works of Brazilian cinema:

In the tradition last fulfilled by Walter Salles’ ‘I’m Still Here’, Marianna Brennand’s film ‘Manas’ continues Brazil’s most lasting cinematographic legacy. Films of striking social relevance that never fall into controversy or sensationalism, but instead, portray with such confidence the difficult situation and courage of their characters. ‘Manas’ is deeply moving, moving and, God forbid… important. I felt like I had to redress after watching it. Sean Penn
