Karl Urban reveals that Johnny Cage will be a “broken” man in Mortal Kombat II

During the Mortal Kombat II panel at New York Comic Con 2025, Karl Urban revealed new details about his version of Johnny Cage, which promises to surprise fans of the saga. The actor described a darker and more vulnerable approach to the iconic fighter, who this time begins the story at rock bottom.

“When we first meet him, Johnny Cage is a completely unmotivated character,” Urban explained. “His career went down the drain, he stopped training in martial arts and the world has forgotten who he is. There’s very little of that arrogance and confidence we know from games, he’s a broken man. But throughout the film, we’ll see him transform into a true champion of Earthrealm and be drawn, unintentionally, into an epic and insane adventure. It’s going to be mind-blowing.”

The film’s screenwriter, Jeremy Slater, added that this narrative choice serves to give the character emotional depth. “The Johnny of gaming, the biggest star in the world, is not someone you can go on a real journey with. So we wanted to explore who he is before he becomes this legendary figure again.”

Urban also spoke about the experience of working with the cast of Mortal Kombat II, comparing it to his work on the series The Boys. “It was a real party,” he confessed. “In the series, the group is like a family, we spent five years together. And coming into this film, which already had such a cohesive cast and crew, was incredible. I was welcomed with open arms and we quickly created a bond. It was one of the most challenging projects of my career, technically, physically and mentally. But the stunt team was fantastic. We hung in there, together. We became a family.”

Mortal Kombat II hits theaters on May 15, 2026, and promises to be the most intense and emotional chapter of the saga so far.
