Many consider this Sylvester Stallone film a classic, but he believes it is “incomplete” and “could have done better” – Film News
It was a box office success that didn’t excite critics and Stallone agrees with them.
Thanks to a brilliant career – especially in the 80s -, Sylvester Stallone became a key figure in action films in cinema. Since he started with the brilliant Rocky, a Wrestler – which we couldn’t say belongs to the genre, but which undoubtedly put him on the industry’s map -, Stallone has accumulated great titles such as Rambo and its series of sequels, Cop Land (1997) and Daredevil (1993). Not to mention the Expendables saga, which began in 2010 and reaffirmed him as Hollywood’s greatest hero, despite the failure of the last part.
Few have a filmography of this level, but even Stallone has failures in his career. And he didn’t hide them. He has always publicly acknowledged which films he doesn’t like and what exactly he would change about them. At a meeting at the Toronto International Film Festival, Stallone assured that Stallone’s Cobra, the 1986 action film directed by George P. Cosmatos, is “incomplete”, as reported by the JoBlo.
I could have done better, but I wasn’t focused enough. I felt like it was something I should have directed, but I didn’t, and I regret it. That’s one of the things about making movies, besides watching your hair fall out: you say, ‘Oh my God, why didn’t I try harder?
Warner Bros.
Stallone signed the Cobra script after having proposed his own version of Beverly Hills Cop – yes, the one by Eddie Murphy – and being rejected. He wanted to turn it into an action film, but the studio supported the more comical part and Stallone withdrew from the project. That’s how he started working on this film which, after many drafts, included even more violence.
Cobra tells the story of Marion “Cobra” Cobretti, who protects the only surviving witness to a violent crime. Los Angeles is facing the uprising of a sect known as The New World that believes in eliminating the weakest through murder. Of course, Cobra and the witness, Ingrid, fall in love and then it becomes personal.
The film, as Stallone well knows, was not well received by the press. In fact, the legendary Roger Ebert took aim directly at the actor and lamented that he “was wasting his talent and enormous potential.” However, time has treated it very well and it is currently a cult title among action fans. One of his biggest fans is Nicolas Winding Refn, who claims to have been inspired by the protagonist for his masterpiece, Drive. Do you remember Ryan Gosling’s character’s toothpick? Stallone’s fault.
The film includes all the imagery that made Stallone a Hollywood star, so if you like watching him fight and don’t ask for more, it’s a great option to spend the afternoon.
Stallone Cobra is available for streaming on HBO Max.
