Mortal Kombat 3 is announced and is already in development

Even before the premiere of Mortal Kombat 2set for May 15, 2026, Warner Bros. confirmed that a third film in the franchise is already in development. The announcement was made by screenwriter Jeremy Slater during New York Comic-Con, confirming that he will return as responsible for the script after also signing the sequel.

There are still no details about the story of Mortal Kombat 3 There is no release date, but the expectation is that the same production team from Mortal Kombat 2 will return. The second film is produced by Todd Garner, James Wan, Toby Emmerich, E. Bennett Walsh and Simon McQuoid, who also directs the sequel, in addition to executive producers Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Jeremy Slater and Lawrence Kasanoff.

The franchise

Based on the classic video game franchise created by Ed Boon and John Tobias in 1992, the saga follows martial arts tournaments between heroes and villains from different realms, such as Earthrealm and Outworld. The new film promises to expand the universe and include new iconic characters from the game.

Mortal Kombat 2 will again feature Lewis Tan in the role of Cole Young, in addition to the returns of Jessica McNamee, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tadanobu Asano, Hiroyuki Sanada and Joe Taslim. New cast members include Karl Urban as Johnny Cage and Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn.

The first film, released in 2021, was considered a commercial success, grossing more than $84 million even with its simultaneous release in theaters and on HBO Max during the pandemic. Now, with the second film having its exclusive premiere in theaters, Warner is betting on consolidating Mortal Kombat as one of its strongest action and fantasy franchises.
