The two previous opuses of Thomas Kruithof showed us this French director’s appetite for societal subjects. With The Embershe introduces us to a couple, married for 20 years, with two grown-up teenagers at home.
Yellow vest movement
Jimmy is a road contractor, Karine is a worker in a food factory. During a meeting held by the management of the said factory, Karine and her comrades learn that production rates will have to be seriously increased.
It was then that the Yellow Vest movement was formed in France. Karine lets herself be led away and, to the great dismay of her family, haunts the roundabouts. Night and day… Jimmy doesn’t really understand the intensity of such a commitment and especially what Karine thinks she will gain from it. Until Jimmy’s biggest client sets new conditions….
Commitment problem
Thomas Kruithof’s film clearly poses the problem of physical commitment, whether political, union, protest, and the consequences that this can have on a couple when the final visions diverge.
The whole family goes through the scanner here with impeccable accuracy. Arieh Worthalter is a Jimmy of incredible playing power. This is unfortunately not the case for Virginie Efira (Karine). This wonderful actress still has a little difficulty putting on a yellow vest. It nonetheless remains a lovely love story…
