‘My Mind Was Spinning’: Jacob Elordi’s Painful Weight Loss Was a ‘Blessing’ for Frankenstein – Film News

He brings the creature to life in Guillermo del Toro’s film adaptation, which hits Netflix on November 7th.

One of the most anticipated films of the year is by Guillermo del Toro. Frankenstein, the new adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel, is directed by director King of the Monsters, and the monster in this film is played by Jacob Elordi. The actor brings to life one of the most iconic characters in gothic literature, horror and science fiction, and his previous project helped him channel all the suffering that a role like this entails.

Elordi starred in The Narrow Road to the Northern Confins (2025), a miniseries set during World War II about an Australian doctor captured by the Japanese, before embarking on the journey proposed by Del Toro. To bring Dorrigo Evans to life, the actor had to lose weight. It was painful but a blessing for Frankenstein.

“My mind was out of control”called Elordi in the Los Angeles Times. “I had moments of great anguish around 3 am. I woke up with terrible pain in my body”. The actor joined Frankenstein at the last minute, as Andrew Garfield was originally going to play the Creature. However, the actor had to abandon the project and that’s when Elordi came into the picture, having nine weeks to prepare the role. “I realized it was a blessing that Frankenstein was close, because I could express these feelings, this suffering.”he explains.

On the other hand, Frankenstein arrived at a time of crisis for the actor. He was struggling with his purpose as a performer and “the unbearable weight of being.” “At that moment in my life, I really wanted to hide”reveals. “I was desperate to find some normality and rebuild my acting and my approach to cinema, and when the film arrived, I remember thinking, ‘Phew! How I wanted to leave!’. I knew, immediately, that Creature was where I was supposed to go. I was supposed to put on this mask of freedom.”.

When Elordi says “this mask of freedom”, he means it. The actor, despite the time he had to spend in makeup to transform into the Creature, was grateful for playing a role without his face. “I no longer had to be this version of myself”indica. “In these six months, I completely rebuilt myself. And I came out of this film with completely new skin”.

Frankenstein, which stars Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, the scientist who creates the Creature and the real monster in this story, is now showing in selected theaters.

Frankenstein will be available on Netflix from November 7th.
