Nicolas Cage has already turned down the comedy film that turned Jim Carrey into a Hollywood star
Nicolas Cage turned down one of Jim Carrey’s most beloved films, but won the only Oscar of his career in return.
If today Jim Carrey is celebrated as one of the greatest comedy actors in the history of Hollywood, one of the films responsible for his success in cinema was Debi & Loide (1994), which he starred in alongside Jeff Daniels.
But things could have turned out very differently… Before Jeff Daniels was cast, Nicolas Cage was considered for the role of Harry Dunnewhich was Jim Carrey’s own wish, as he recalled in an interview with The Guardian:
I remember when Jim (Carrey) wanted me to do it. I was at Chateau Marmont, rehearsing with Mike Figgis, preparing for Farewell in Las Vegas, which was a conflict with Debi & Loid. I’m glad they made the movie and I’m happy for them, but I think I made the right choice
When Nicolas Cage comments about making the right choice, he’s not wrong. Farewell in Las Vegas (1995) earned him an Oscar for Best Actor and is considered one of the best films of his career, written and directed by Mike Figgis.
Meanwhile, Debi & Loide – Two Idiots in Trouble grossed US$247.3 million at the box office (on a budget of US$17 million) and boosted Jim Carrey’s career in Hollywood alongside Ace Ventura – A Different Detective and The Mask.
