Oscar-winning Hollywood star comes across empty movie theater after releasing new film

Imagine: you are an Oscar-winning star, lead singer of a successful band, releasing your new film. Then you decide to do something “funny” and go to the cinema to watch the film alongside the fans… except that the cinema has several rows of empty seats. That’s what happened to Jared Leto, Oscar winner for Dallas Buyers Club (2013) and star of the new Disney film Tron: Ares.

On social media, many comments theorize that part of the film’s failure is precisely due to Leto’s presence in the cast. The 30 Seconds to Mars singer was accused of sexual misconduct by nine women, including minors, according to an article on the Air Mail website published in June. He denies all accusations.

According to Monet Magazine, Tron: Ares grossed US$66 million in its first week in theaters, well below the US$180 million expected by Disney. The film had an estimated budget of US$220 million and, according to Deadine, it should cost the studio’s coffers more than US$132 million.

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, Tron: Ares has 53% approval from critics and 86% from the public.

“Ares, a sophisticated program, is sent from the digital world to the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humanity’s first encounter with Artificial Intelligence beings”says the official synopsis released by Disney.

The film is the third in the franchise, which also includes Tron: An Electronic Odyssey (1982) and Tron – Legacy (2010).
