Other breaks planned at the Mexican factory where GM assembles its vans
During the first two weeks of July, General Motors (GM) suspended production at its Mexican factory in Silao, Mexico, where she produces Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra vans.
In August, according to well -informed sources, two other weeks of break are planned, those of 4 and 11. GM confirmed that the factory was stopped in July, but did not specify the precise dates of the stops in August.
It is not uncommon to see a company suspend production to one of its plans to carry out update work. However, the break is long in this case, and it takes place in two stages, which raises questions.
“The weeks of stopping scheduled for GM Silao are part of a standard operating process aimed at optimizing production in our manufacturing complex,” said GM, in response to a request made by the Reuters agency.
Are the breaks linked to the effects of Donald Trump’s prices? On certain occasions, we feel very cautious manufacturers to mention it directly, but considering that the Silverado and Sierra are the models that bring the most profits at GM, the question deserves to be asked.
Several weeks of stopping are something unusual for a factory that manufactures the most popular models of a brand. The trade war launched by American president Donald Trump disrupted the supply chains and the factory work of manufacturers and parts of parts in recent months.
GM sold 278,599 Silverado in the first six months of 2025. It is an increase of 2 % compared to the same period the previous year. On the GMC side, the results are even more convincing, while 166,409 Sierra van vortes were sold during the same period, an increase of 12 % compared to the first half of 2024.
We will probably never know the real cause of these prolonged breaks. What we know is that several car companies have changed their production plans to mitigate the impact of customs duties imposed by Donald Trump on imported vehicles.
The good news for GM is that sales of the two models are increasing. However, the situation will have to be monitored closely in the coming months.
