Savage Lands will take place 300 years in the future

Predator: Savage Lands is the new chapter in the classic science fiction franchise and promises to take the Predator universe to territories never before explored. Fans’ main question revolves around when the film takes place — and the answer completely changes the future of not only the Predator series, but also the Alien franchise, as both share the same universe.

During a visit to the set, the website ScreenRant confirmed that Savage Lands is set in the distant future, hundreds of years ahead of previous events. This choice represents an unprecedented time jump for the universe of the Yautja, the warrior race known as Predators.

A leap of centuries in time

Although the studio has not yet revealed the exact year, Predator: Savage Lands should take place around 300 years in the future, even surpassing Alien: The Resurrection, set in 2381. Unlike other films, which take place in the present or in historical times, such as The Predator: The Hunt (2022), the new film dives into a completely futuristic era — with unexplored worlds, new species and a society Radically transformed Yautja.

The film will showcase new planets and creatures, including the dangerous “Genna World”, where protagonists Dek and Thia face the creature Kalisk. Everything indicates that the film will be the most ambitious in the franchise, significantly expanding the mythology of the Predators.

The connection with the Alien universe

This time jump not only impacts the Predator franchise, but also redefines the future of the Alien saga. According to the producers, the film shows a period in which there are no longer biological humans, only synthetic ones created by Weyland-Yutani, the central corporation in the Alien universe.

The character Thia, played by Elle Fanning, is one of these synthetics — part of a crew entirely made up of androids. Producer Ben Rosenblatt explained that these models are more advanced and aware than those seen in previous films such as David, Ash and Bishop. This technological evolution reinforces the importance of Predator: Savage Lands within the Alien chronology.

On the other hand, the temporal distance means that the film should not feature classic characters from the Predator franchise, such as the one played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, nor will it function as a direct sequel to The Hunt or the animated film released this year, Predator: Killer of Killers.

The future of franchises

Since taking charge of the Predator series, director Dan Trachtenberg (from The Hunt) has been building a new phase for the Predators universe. According to the producers, The Hunt 2 is still in development, but Predator: Savage Lands was conceived as an independent story, with a more epic and experimental tone.

Even though it’s not officially an Alien vs. Predator, the film should pave the way for new connections between the two franchises. There are rumors that the outcome of Predator: Savage Lands will bring a big twist involving Thia and Weyland-Yutani — something that could set the stage for a future crossover.

Director Fede Álvarez, of Alien: Romulus, has already expressed interest in reliving the clash between the two creatures, and Predator: Savage Lands could be the missing link to make this confrontation possible again.

With an unprecedented setting, existential themes and a focus on a new generation of synthetic beings, Predator: Savage Lands promises to be a watershed moment in the shared universe of Alien and Predator — taking both franchises into the future, literally.
